About the Artist
Nancy Andrews is an experienced storyteller, documentarian and artist who moves easily between photography, video, text and mixed media materials. In 2023 the National Gallery of Art acquired a 72-image collection of Andrews’ photographs, “Family: A Portrait of Gay & Lesbian America.”
For Andrews, the act of bearing witness to others and the world around us is a calling. The resulting artwork can be documentary or interpretive. She believes that at its most eloquent, the artwork catches attention, provokes questions, and leads to greater awareness and understanding of our fellow humans and the world around us. In short, art is communication and it can change the world.
Andrews works from a foundation in journalism, with her early career spent as a staff member at The Washington Post and the Detroit Free Press. She’s been recognized as photographer of the year by the White House News Photographers Association and University of Missouri’s and National Press Photographers Association Pictures of the Year International. She’s also earned three Emmy Awards from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and two Edward R. Murrow Awards. She is the author of two books, “Family: A Portrait of Gay & Lesbian America,” (1994) and “Partial View: An Alzheimer’s Journey,” (1998).
Her local exhibitions include a solo exhibition of work at West Virginia University’s Media Innovation Center (100 Days, 100 Voices, 2017) and group shows at Jewish Community Center (Each and Every, 2018) and SPACE Gallery (Behind Our Scenes, 2013).
A native of Virginia, Andrews now calls Pittsburgh home.
