About the Artist

Darnell ChambersDarnell Chambers is a San Diego, California–born artist, curator, and cultural organizer based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. A graduate of the The Art Institute of Pittsburgh, where he earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts, Chambers has developed a practice rooted in archival research, contemporary art, and Black cultural memory.

His work is deeply informed by his upbringing and lived experience as a Black man in America. While not defined solely by struggle, his practice acknowledges the structural inequities and cultural barriers that have historically shaped Black life and continue to impact Black artists navigating institutional spaces. Through exhibition-making, mural work, and community-centered programming, he approaches art as a form of spatial storytelling—creating platforms where history, resilience, and forward-looking narratives coexist.

Chambers has contributed to major institutional projects, including Mill Creek: Black Metropolis and #1 in Civil Rights: The African American Freedom Struggle in St. Louis at the Missouri History Museum, where he conducted primary archival research and developed large-scale visual work in dialogue with historical materials. He has also participated in the 57th Carnegie International at the Carnegie Museum of Art.

As founder and director of FlowerHouse PGH, Chambers leads community-focused initiatives centered on intergenerational exchange, cultural equity, and creative empowerment. Across institutions and grassroots spaces alike, his work remains committed to clarity, dignity, and expanding the narrative presence of Black voices.

PROJECT

Pittsburgh Creative Corps

Designed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Pittsburgh Creative Corps initiative engages artists and creative workers to activate the public realm while providing economic opportunity.

“I believe public art enhances the visual aesthetics of a community while also stimulating conversation and dialogue that directly serves the people within it. It has the ability to bring artists and communities together across cultural backgrounds, helping to bridge misunderstandings.”
