Book Tour: Mysteries of Pittsburgh

Writer Michael Chabon started work on his bestselling debut novel, The Mysteries of Pittsburgh, as an undergraduate student at the University of Pittsburgh, and the book’s characters travel widely around the city. Join local writers Sherrie Flick and Hattie Fletcher on this walking tour retracing some notable settings and scenes from the novel and considering how a place inspires story. Please note that Michael Chabon will not be in attendance on this tour.

Attendees are not required to bring additional items to the tour; there will be no writing on this tour.

Access & Accommodations

The tour will meet in front of the main entrance of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh in Oakland, 4000 Forbes Avenue, Carnegie Lecture Hall Pittsburgh, PA 15213.
This event will take place outdoors; please dress accordingly and wear comfortable shoes. This tour will take place rain or shine. Please be prepared for any type of weather.
The route of this tour will navigate city sidewalks and crosswalks along a mostly flat, paved surface. There is one section of the tour that involves stairs, though participants may choose an alternate route on the other side of the building.

Public restrooms are not available along this tour.

As protected by law, service animals are always welcome. You are not required to inform us of your plans to bring a service animal. However, informing the event organizer will allow our team to ensure your service animal has a designated rest area, if needed.

Public parking is available at the Forbes Semple Garage; street parking is also available.
If taking public transportation, there is a Pittsburgh Regional Transit stop at Forbes + Bellefield that serves routes 61A, 61B, 61C, 61D, 67, and 69. For more information, please visit the PRT website: https://www.rideprt.org/

Bicycle Parking

Bike racks are available on the campus of the Carnegie Public Library and throughout the nearby vicinity.

Photography, Videography, and Other Documentation

Participants should be aware that photography, video recording, and/or other documentation of the event by Shiftworks, other attendees, or the media may take place during the event. Participants will have an opportunity to indicate if they choose to opt out of being included in event documentation, and our team will make reasonable efforts to accommodate these preferences.

Cancellations and Refunds

This tour will take place rain or shine; please be prepared for any type of weather. If there is severe weather the day of the tour requiring cancellation, participants will be notified by email 2 – 4 hours before the start of the tour and refunds will be issued to the original form of payment. All other sales are final.
