About the Artist
Stefanie Zito is a Pittsburgh-based interdisciplinary artist whose work explores ecology, home, and the passage of time. Her practice blends traditional domestic techniques—spinning, weaving, stitching, natural dyeing—with materials she grows, forages, and reclaims. Using food scraps, plant-based dyes, and domestic remnants, she creates fiber sculptures and installations that invite reflection and connection in shared space.
Influenced by permaculture and eco-materialism, Stefanie’s work considers cycles of growth and decay, permanence and impermanence. Colors may shift and fade, but form remains—echoing natural rhythms and underscoring our relationship to place, memory, and care. She is increasingly eager to explore opportunities for public engagement, collaboration, and participatory practice. Stefanie is especially interested in how slow, material-led processes can generate connection and conversation across communities, and how fiber can function as both a sculptural and social medium. Her work creates opportunities to pause— offering moments of wonder and sensory engagement that ground viewers in their surroundings.
Stefanie is a graduate of the New York Center for Arts and Media Studies and a Certified Permaculture Designer. She holds a B.A. in Studio Art from Messiah College and will begin her MFA at Carnegie Mellon University in Fall 2025. Her work has been exhibited in Fiberart International (Contemporary Craft and Fort Collins Museum of Art), Tenuous Threads (Atlantic Gallery, NYC), World of Threads (Canada), and the International Art Textile Biennale (Australia). She completed a residency with Contemporary Craft in 2023.

“Collaboration shapes my practice, extending from people to the ecological realm. Inspired by permaculture, I engage with spaces, materials, and histories, creating works in dialogue with their environments.”
