About the Artist

Since 2017, artists and educators Sean Derry and Sharon Massey have been collaborating as Local X Change. Through our collaboration we seek to democratize art and technology. Local X Change’s public programming spans a variety of initiatives including participatory public projects, innovative learning modules for both formal and informal educational settings, teacher trainings, and curriculum development. Local X Change prioritizes collaboration and civic engagement as a tactic to empower participants/learners to discover original design solutions and gain agency with technology. Scaffolded programming builds confidence among participants who don’t identify as tech savvy and enables all participants to engage in the creative process to achieve authentic design solutions. Our work increases digital literacy, sparks curiosity, and builds community. We have presented Local X Change programming initiatives at digital fabrication and STEAM conferences internationally. Local X Change is supported in part by grant funding from regional and federal agencies.

PROJECT

The Quarantine Companion

When the quarantine began, an artist team led by Sharon Massey and Sean Derry began distributing “kits” consisting of needle, thread, googly eyes and instructions for how people could create their own companions using leftover fabric and other scraps.

“We encourage the public to engage in our projects as participants and to think creatively, be self-reflective, and consider the importance of art in their lives. Our work is guided by a community-focused social practice methodology intended to expand our collective understanding of shared space.”
