About the Artist
Jameelah Platt is an interdisciplinary artist, production designer, and set decorator from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with a primary focus on painting, collage, and narrative-driven visual storytelling. She began her studies at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, where she focused on Fine Art and Art History, before transferring to Point Park University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies with concentrations in Production Design, Cinema Arts, and Art History. Her background bridges the worlds of studio art and film, allowing her to craft immersive visual experiences across multiple mediums.
In addition to her personal art practice, Jameelah has extensive experience in production design and set decoration for film and theater, where she brings her keen eye for color, texture, and historical references to life. She specializes in crafting environments that enhance storytelling, drawing inspiration from Black culture, mid-century modern aesthetics, and the interplay between space, memory, and identity.
Artist Statement
Influenced by Black American culture, history, and the people we choose to immortalize, my work explores the intersection of portraiture, narrative-building, and spatial design. My work is guided by an attraction to body language, the relationship between figures and their environment, and the use of color, light, and theatricality to shape mood and tone. I am particularly drawn to the ways gestures and expressions communicate untold stories, how space frames identity and history, and how composition influences the emotional resonance of a narrative.
With a priority to create work that heals, reflects, and celebrates my community, my practice is rooted in African American portraiture, cinema, assemblage, and the adornment of objects, spaces, and people. Whether through painting, collage, or set design, I seek to construct visually compelling worlds that honor history, memory, and the beauty of everyday Black life.
