About the Artist
Andréa Grasso has a diverse background that consistently propels them into concise and challenging artistic endeavors. Andréa studied graphic design at the art institute of Pittsburgh, where they learned visual precision, the power of composition, and digital tools for expression. They studied socially engaged art at Portland state university, where they began to understand how to push the boundaries of art, how movements and the zeitgeist can be expressed in less traditional ways, and how collaboration, engagement, and approaching projects with an open mind, ultimately allowing them to evolve naturally can be much more meaningful creative process. And they studied city planning at Temple university, where they learned processes of cyclical planning, open engagement, and tools to understand complex processes, how to develop a cohesive vision, how to be respectful of culture and history, and how much “showing up” really matters in life.
Andréa has worked on dozens of mural projects with various community groups over the years. This includes working with mental health facilities, returning citizens, people experiencing homelessness, schools, and corporations. We would spend time, talk, be present, and create art together. In these projects, Andréa designed and led workshops such as: abstract collage, and narrative poetry, that would ultimately become the inspiration for the creation of mural designs. Andréa has also curated, developed, and managed public art programs partnering with various urban sites with the goal of democratizing contemporary art and developing creative ways to activate unused, or underutilized urban spaces.
