Online sessions focus on building community relationships and collaborative practices
Pittsburgh, PA – Office of Public Art is pleased to present Public Art Training Camp, a six-week training series for artists and arts administrators at any stage of their career, and for those seeking to work with artists in a community setting. The sessions will be held virtually via Zoom and will take place Thursdays from 4:00 PM – 5:30 PM, October 7 through November 11, 2021. One session will be held on Wednesday, November 3, 2021 from 4:00 PM – 5:30 PM. Tickets for the series are Pay What You Can with prices ranging from $10 – $15 for individual sessions and $65 for a five session series, which does not include the session with Center for Performance and Civic Practice. Tickets to this session must be purchased separately as attendance is limited.
About the Series
For this season of Public Art Training Camp, OPA has brought together a roster of local and national speakers who have put building relationships and working with communities at the center of their practice. The season’s goal is to provide attendees with the tools and knowledge necessary to embark on successful collaborative work. To launch the series, the first session focuses on a creative placemaking project in Pittsburgh’s Hill District with artist Njaimeh Njie and the Hill House Association. The following sessions will explore different approaches for artists to build relationships with community members, ensure equitable practices in their projects, facilitate community engagement, work with fabricators, and create project management strategies. The format of the sessions will allow for interaction and reflection with the presenters.
“We are excited to present a second season of Public Art Training Camp, and to use these six sessions to highlight how artists, communities, and organizations are collaborating and using alternative methods to make art in the public realm,” said Rachel Klipa, OPA’s Program Manager. “We believe that civically engaged public art, as demonstrated by these speakers and the projects that they have been involved in, can more deeply engage communities in discussions of place and result in creative solutions to the challenges that our communities face. The tools and ideas that will be presented this season will help artists and those working with artists to expand their practices and engage more perspectives within their work.”
