Office for Public Art’s Public Art Training Camp Series Returns October 26, 2023

Pittsburgh, PA — The Office for Public Art (OPA) is pleased to announce this year’s lineup for Public Art Training Camp. This comprehensive six-week program is designed to empower artists and cultural workers wanting to enter the field of public art.

“The past two years of Public Art Training Camp have marked a shift in how we design the program,” said Rachel Klipa, OPA’s Program Manager for Education and Outreach. “We’ve pivoted to focus on participant feedback and implemented roundtable discussions with past attendees that generated wonderful ideas for this year’s program. We will continue to develop how we involve Public Art Training Camp participants so that the program remains relevant and meaningful.”

Series Details

Each session will be held online via Zoom from 4:00 PM – 5:45 PM on Thursdays from October 26 through December 7, 2023. There will not be a session on Thursday, November 23, 2023. Registration is $15 per session and can be purchased on an individual basis until sold out. In addition to Public Art Training Camp, OPA will host an evening of artist portfolio reviews on Wednesday, November 8, 2023 from 6:00 PM – 8:30 PM. Featured speakers from across the country will share invaluable expertise to help artists expand their public art practice. Public Art Training Camp begins with the captivating realm of performance art in public spaces with an artist talk by award-winning performer Jasmine Hearn. Session two features Berkeley-based artist and administrator Marks Salinas; Salinas will provide know-how for securing fiscal and in-kind resources for community-driven projects. Seattle-based artist and administrator Elisheba Johnson will demystify budgets in session three, while Pittsburgh-based artist Brian Peters will showcase effective strategies for working with fabricators in session four. Public Art Training Camp 2023 concludes with Phoenix-based visual artist and independent cultural strategist Estrella Esquilín guiding attendees through the complexities of applying for public art opportunities in session five, and local artist Rob Long unlocking the secrets to crafting compelling work samples in session six.
