Join Flamenco Pittsburgh for this free class to learn the basics of flamenco. Flamenco is an art form based on the folkloric music traditions of southern Spain, later shaped and influenced by musicians and performers in the Caribbean, Latin America, and Europe. UNESCO recently recognized it as part of the World’s Intangible Cultural Heritage. Many have fallen in love with the passion, joy, and rhythm that Flamenco embodies from exquisite combinations of singing (cante), music (toque), dance (baile), and rhythmic hand-clapping (palmas). Please wear comfortable clothes, bring water, and wear comfortable shoes. Class duration is one hour and 15 minutes.
Flamenco Pittsburgh seeks to celebrate and increase awareness of flamenco culture in Western Pennsylvania. As part of that mission, we offer flamenco instruction for the community, for beginner to advanced levels. Our instructors and performing artists are professionals who teach and perform in addition to their daytime vocations. Our students represent a spectrum of ages, demographics, and professional pursuits—we have children, grad students, physicians, computer scientists, writers, architects, media and opera professionals, lawyers, construction workers…a rich cross-section! Those drawn to explore flamenco typically represent a wonderful mix of heritage, too, from native Latinos, to Asian, Indian, Eastern European, and other ethnic origins.
