SUMMARY:Sycamore Island Kayak Tour
DESCRIPTION:The Office for Public Art (OPA) is pleased to announce a new series of artist-designed walking tours during the late summer and early fall of 2023. OPA maintains a long-standing history of hosting and organizing walking tours for the public. To further expand this programmatic offering\, OPA commissioned four Pittsburgh Creative Corps artists to design and experiment with how tour-goers experience the region’s public realm. The artists for the tours are: Ginger Brooks Takahashi\, Erin Mallea\, Jason McKoy\, and Monica McElwain. \nEach tour in the series was conceptualized by the artists and focuses on engaging audience members through artistic practices\, participant observations\, listening\, physical activity\, and games. \nSycamore Island Kayak Tour\nArtist Erin Mallea\, in collaboration with artist Monica Cervone McElwain\, will lead two related kayak tours. Each tour focuses on the Allegheny River and its coves and islands. \nArtist Erin Mallea will take participants by kayak to Sycamore Island for a listening walk. Managed by the Allegheny Land Trust\, Sycamore Island is one of the few undeveloped islands in Allegheny County. The island hosts a unique floodplain hardwood forest and presents an opportunity for the public to visit and experience a wild\, natural island within an urban environment. \nParticipants will be led on island walking trails with a series of listening prompts focused on layers of human intervention and natural cycles. Participants will practice redirecting attention\, practicing close listening to distant\, subtle and shifting sounds\, and increasing awareness of our larger sonic environment. \nAbout Erin Mallea\nErin Mallea is a multidisciplinary artist currently based in Pittsburgh\, PA. Her practice explores the past and present of particular microcosms as entry points into larger environmental\, social\, and political conditions. Often public and collaborative in nature\, her work manifests in a range of media including installation\, video\, photography\, writing\, and participatory projects. She has exhibited at galleries\, museums and DIY art spaces nationally and internationally\, sent vibrations from a giant fungus throughout the atmosphere\, and currently publishes Tree News\, a newsletter about trees\, people and places. Erin holds a MFA from Carnegie Mellon University (2019) and is an Assistant Professor of Art at the Pennsylvania State University School of Visual Arts. \nPreparation\nParticipants should be dressed appropriately for kayaking to\, and spending time on\, Sycamore Island. Please wear comfortable\, quick drying/active clothing that can get wet. A hat\, sunscreen\, and sunglasses are recommended. Wear walking sandals or shoes that are comfortable and able to get wet\, and safe for walking on trails and uneven terrain. The trails at Sycamore Island are cleared and maintained\, however\, there can be poison ivy off trail. Socks can be helpful for this if you’re wearing sandals. Optional: dry bag/waterproof bag for a phone and wallet (10.7 Marina has some available with rental). \nArtist Erin Mallea will bring materials that are needed for participation in this tour; participants are prohibited from bringing any disposable or non-recyclable items. Sycamore Island is a Leave No Trace island. \nPublic restrooms are available at 10.7 Marina. \nKayak Information\nPlease note\, kayakers should be skilled enough to launch their own kayaks and be able to get back on shore without assistance. Attendees are required to wear life vests\, must participate in a short kayak safety training\, and sign a waiver before the tour begins. \nParticipants may bring their own kayak or rent one on-site at a discounted rate. \nDirections and Parking Information\nTour goers will meet at 10.7 Marina located at 314 Arch St\, Verona\, PA 15147. Please plan to arrive on time for a group briefing on safety and kayak procedures and to ensure that the tour will start on time. \nParking is available at 10.7 Marina. \nAccessibility\nThere are no accessibility accommodations available for this tour. \nRegistration\nThe artist designed tours will occur rain or shine. In the event of cancellation due to severe weather\, registrants will be notified via email up to three hours in advance of the event’s start time. Registrants will be reimbursed for tours that are canceled due to inclement weather. All other tour sales are final. \nThere are two ticket types available for this tour: $20.00 with a kayak rental or $15.00 if bringing your own kayak. SUMMARY:Write the Neighborhood: Morningside
DESCRIPTION:Since 2021\, local writer Sherrie Flick has led the popular Walk & Write Tour series for the Office for Public Art. The fall of 2023 marks the third season of this successful program\, after two seasons of exploring Downtown Pittsburgh\, Hazelwood\, the North Shore\, and the South Side. \nThese hour-and-a-half tours traverse city neighborhoods connected to\, or nearby water\, and introduce tour-goers to various walking trails and footpaths that run along Pittsburgh’s three rivers and other waterways. \nAs participants walk these areas\, attendees have the opportunity to exercise their creative writing skills as they respond to Flick’s writing prompts at each tour stop. The writing prompts are unique to each tour route and correspond with its surroundings. \nAll writing abilities are welcome and no previous writing experiences is necessary. Please bring paper and a writing implement; wear good walking shoes\, and bring your curiosity to environments that may be new to you. \nWrite the Neighborhood: Morningside\nThe Write the Neighborhood: Morningside Tour denotes a fun shift in Flick’s Walk & Write series. For the first time\, Flick will invite a guest writer to lead the walking tour in a neighborhood of their choice. Flick’s writing prompts will be in response to the guest’s route and selection of readings at each stop. \nThis Walk & Write Tour will introduce visiting writer\, Joy Katz.  Come gather inspiration from Katz’s favorite neighborhood walk. Katz will read aloud at each stop as participants walk (and write) during this tour of Morningside. The tour will be a mostly flat walking surface on sidewalks. \nAbout Joy Katz\n\nJoy Katz loves writing on the shifting border between poetry\, nonfiction\, and memoir. Her latest essay is “Tennis is the Opposite of Death: A Proof\,” in The Paris Review\, a 2022 Best American Essays finalist\, and her latest poetry collection is All You Do Is Perceive\, a National Poetry Series finalist. A Writing Pittsburgh fellow\, she was writer-in-residence at Grasso Sausage\, the last Italian business in Larimer. Honors for her work include National Endowment for the Arts\, Barbara Deming Foundation\, and Stegner fellowships\, and she collaborates in the social practice art collective IfYouReallyLoveMe.org\, whose most recent project was live music for shift workers. Joy teaches off the tenure track in Carlow University’s Madwomen in the Attic writing workshops. \n\nAbout Sherrie Flick\n\n\n\nSherrie Flick is the author of four books\, including her 2018 short story collection Thank Your Lucky Stars (Autumn House Press). Recent work appears in New England Review\, Ploughshares\, and Booth. Co-editor for the 2023 anthology Flash Fiction America (W. W. Norton)\, she also served as series editor for The Best Small Fictions 2018 and is a senior editor at SmokeLong Quarterly. Her debut essay collection\, Homing: Instincts of a Rustbelt Feminist is forthcoming from University of Nebraska Press in 2024. The tour will include stops that are popular points of interest in both Etna and Sharpsburg\, and will encourage attendees to engage with people and places that were significant to McKoy’s development of his artistic project. The tour will end with refreshments. It is intended that the stops remain secretive so that participants can try and guess each location based on riddles that will be emailed to registrants in advance. Tour stops will be revealed during the tour and are intended to create an informative and game-like atmosphere. \nWe Are Windows is an artwork created by Jason McKoy in collaboration with the Etna Community Organization and the Sharpsburg Neighborhood Organization and is sponsored by the Public Art and Communities Program of the Office for Public Art\, Neighborhood Allies\, and the Borough of Millvale. \nAbout Jason McKoy\nJason McKoy is a brand consultant\, ARTvocate\, social innovator\, and weirdo. Living with major depressive disorder has informed how he navigates the world creatively. He is the founder of McKoy Creative\, a warm hug for your business providing creative services from concept to completion that benefit communities. When not making stuff\, he’s either playing video games or sleeping. He hails from NYC. \nPreparation\nParticipants will be emailed a set of riddles where the answers are stops on the tour. The riddles are a fun pre-tour activity where participants can check their answers as the tour moves from stop to stop; tour stops will not be revealed in advance. Participants are encouraged to engage at each stop and\, at the end of the tour\, attendees will have the opportunity to relax with refreshments. Participants will also receive a swag bag from the tour. \nDirections and Parking Information\nThe Etna Park and Community Pool is located at 2 Pine Street\, Etna\, PA 15223. \nUnmetered street parking is available within the vicinity of the park and pool. \nIf taking public transportation\, the park and pool is accessible via bus routes 2 and P13 with a stop at Butler Street and Maplewood. DESCRIPTION:In this session\, Public Art Training Camp will feature an artist talk by Pittsburgh-based interdisciplinary artist and award-winning performer Jasmine Hearn. Hearn will share the work of their expansive practice that includes a spectrum of dance traditions and techniques\, care\, sound design\, garment design\, and the archiving of matrilineal memories. As part of their talk\, Hearn will also speak to how their experience and projects have operated in public space. \nThis session is intended to inspire and showcase the power of performance art in public spaces. \nSession Format\n\nIntroduction\nSpeaker Presentation\nAudience Questions and Conversation\n\n  \nAbout Jasmine Hearn\n\nJasmine Hearn is an interdisciplinary artist\, director\, award winning performer\, choreographer\, organizer\, doula\, and teacher. They are committed to performance as an expansive practice that includes a spectrum of dance traditions and techniques\, care\, sound design\, garment design\, and the archiving of matrilineal memories. They give gratitude to Spirit\, their mothers and aunties\, and all the mothering Black people who have supported their moving\, traveling\, remembering body. \nHearn has performed their work at venues such as the Kelly Strayhorn Theater\, Pittsburgh\, PA (2021); New York Live Arts\, New York\, NY (2021); Moody Center for the Arts at Rice University\, Houston\, TX (2021); Danspace Project\, New York\, NY (2019\, 2017); and BAAD! Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance\, Bronx\, NY (2016). They have also performed with the companies Helen Simoneau Danse\, Urban Bush Women\, and David Dorfman Dance\, among others\, and collaborated with many artists\, including Holly Bass\, Maria Bauman\, Marjani Forté-Saunders\, Gerard & Kelly\, Vanessa German\, Li Harris\, Bill T. Jones\, Solange Knowles\, Ayanah Moor\, Lovie Olivia\, Staycee Pearl\, Alesandra Seutin\, and Alisha B. Wormsley.\nHearn is the recipient of a Cynthia Hazen Polsky and Leon Polsky Rome Prize in Design with collaborator Athena Kokoronis of Domestic Performance Agency (2023)\, a Creative Capital Award (2022)\, New York Dance and Performance “Bessie” Awards for Outstanding Performer (2021\, 2017)\, a Jerome Hill Artist Fellowship (2019)\, and Foundation for Contemporary Arts Emergency Grants (2022\, 2017). They have been awarded residencies through Movement Research\, New York\, NY; Pittsburgh Foundation\, Pittsburgh\, PA; and the Camargo Foundation\, Cassis\, France. \nHearn\, born and raised on occupied lands now known as Houston\, TX\, studied dance and sound with a multitude of teachers\, including their sister\, cousins\, aunties\, instructors\, and friends at family events\, church\, and took class at the Houston Metropolitan Dance Center. DESCRIPTION:Initiating a creative endeavor often necessitates securing financial support\, and with a well-crafted proposal\, artists can inspire project partners\, both individuals and organizations\, to contribute to its success. Fiscal and in-kind resources play a pivotal role in enabling the entire community to participate\, support\, and engage with a project. Discover the art of securing fiscal and in-kind resources for community-driven projects. Artist and administrator Mark Salinas will provide insights on identifying grant and sponsorship opportunities\, leveraging volunteer contributions\, approaching in-kind donations and labor\, tracking project data for cost estimation\, and crafting compelling project pitches to secure resources. \nThis session will be held online from 4:00 PM – 5:45 PM ET. \nSalinas’ presentation will be followed by an interactive workshop engaging session participants. \nThe questions that will serve as the framework for the guest speaker’s presentation are:\n\nHow can artists and cultural workers identify grant and sponsorship opportunities for funding line items such as project labor and materials?\nHow can a project leverage the time and value of volunteers?\nHow can artists identify and approach in-kind donations and/or labor for projects?\nHow can hours and other project data be tracked to estimate actual costs for projects\, and be used for future grant applications and sponsorships?\nWhat does a strongly pitched project look like to secure fiscal and in-kind resources?\n\nSession Format\n\nIntroduction\nSpeaker Presentation & Audience Questions\nInteractive Workshop\nConclusion\n\nWorkshop\nParticipants will be divided into breakout rooms on Zoom. DESCRIPTION:The Office for Public Art is hosting a portfolio review session to give artists the chance to receive feedback on their work from national and local artists\, curators\, and arts administrators. Artists can reserve 25-minute time slots with a reviewer of their choice over Zoom. \nPortfolio reviewers for the evening are Elisheba Johnson (Seattle\, WA) and Mark Salinas (Berkeley\, CA). \nParticipants can register for up to TWO review time slots. Registration will close on October 27\, 2023. Registrants will be REQUIRED to submit their portfolios in advance. DESCRIPTION:Applications for public art commissions are always a welcome topic for artists. Beyond the usual questions about application preparation\, many applicants for public art projects want to know specifics about how to make their materials standout to win jobs. \nJoin visual artist and independent cultural strategist Estrella Esquilín\, as she expertly navigates the process of applying for public art opportunities\, while also offering strategies to: improve your application for more substantial projects; refine your project self-selection process; and acquire invaluable tips for strengthening your cover letters and artist statements. \nThis session will be held online from 4:00 PM – 5:45 PM ET. \nEsquilín’s presentation will be followed by an interactive workshop engaging session participants. \nThe questions that will serve as the framework for the guest speaker’s presentation are:\n\nHow can rookie artists showcase their ability in an application to take on “bigger” public art projects (essentially\, leveling up)?\nHow can artists improve their own self-selection processes before applying to a project?\nWhat are 3 – 5 main tips cultural workers and artists can use to improve their cover letters and statements?\nHow can artists select their best work samples?\nHow can artists demonstrate the importance of professional experience outside of the art world as useful for public art commissions?\n\nSession Format\n\nIntroduction\nSpeaker Presentation & Audience Questions\nInteractive Workshop\nConclusion\n\nWorkshop\nParticipants will be divided into breakout rooms on Zoom. Rob and his Clear Story team design illumination for many of Pittsburgh’s iconic public spaces\, restaurants and landmarks\, including Sally’s Path\, Pusadee’s Garden and Highmark’s Fifth Avenue Place. \nRob’s abstract photography practice exists at the intersection of his work as an artist and architectural lighting designer.
