SUMMARY:Sycamore Island Kayak Tour
DESCRIPTION:Artist Erin Mallea will take participants by kayak to Sycamore Island for a listening walk. Managed by the Allegheny Land Trust\, Sycamore Island hosts a significant floodplain hardwood forest and presents an opportunity for the public to visit and experience a woodland that is imperiled in Pennsylvania. Participants will be led on island walking trails with a series of listening prompts\, where they will practice redirecting their attention by closely listening to distant\, subtle\, and shifting sounds\, increasing awareness of the larger sonic environment. \nAbout the Kayak Tour Series\nShiftworks Community + Public Arts maintains a long-standing history of hosting and organizing walking tours for the public. To further expand this programmatic offering\, Shiftworks commissioned Pittsburgh Creative Corps artists Erin Mallea and Monica Cervone McElwain to design and experiment with how tour-goers experience the region’s public realm. \nThis series of kayak tours was conceptualized by the artists and focuses on engaging audience members through artmaking\, participant observations\, listening activities\, and walking. \nAbout Erin Mallea\nErin Mallea is a multidisciplinary artist currently based in Pittsburgh\, PA. Her practice explores the past and present of particular microcosms as entry points into larger environmental\, social\, and political conditions. Often public and collaborative in nature\, her work manifests in a range of media including installation\, video\, photography\, writing\, and participatory projects. She has exhibited at galleries\, museums and DIY art spaces nationally and internationally\, sent vibrations from a giant fungus throughout the atmosphere\, and currently publishes Tree News\, a newsletter about trees\, people and places. Erin holds a MFA from Carnegie Mellon University (2019) and is an Assistant Professor of Art at the Pennsylvania State University School of Visual Arts. \n\n\nAdditional Information\nWhile previous kayaking experience isn’t necessary\, this is an intermediate level route\, appropriate for ages 18 +. Kayaking to Sycamore island will take approximately 20 minutes\, and participants should be prepared for a longer return trip upstream. The return trip can take 30 minutes depending on the current and wind conditions. \nAttendees are required to wear life vests (which will be provided on-site)\, must participate in a short kayak safety training\, and sign a waiver before the tour begins. Please arrive promptly at 9:00 AM to undergo the short training and prepare to launch. Tour-goers will be on the water by 9:30 AM. \nParticipants should be dressed appropriately for kayaking to\, and spending time on\, Sycamore Island. Please wear comfortable\, quick-drying/active clothing that can get wet. It is recommended to bring a dry change of clothes to enjoy the marina and food after the tour. A hat\, sunscreen\, and sunglasses are recommended. Wear walking sandals or shoes that are comfortable and able to get wet\, and are safe for walking on trails and uneven terrain. The trails at Sycamore Island are cleared and maintained\, however\, there can be poison ivy off trail. Socks can be helpful for this if you are wearing sandals. Be sure to check the weather conditions the morning of the tour and bring appropriate layers. \nThis tour will take place rain or shine. Please be prepared for any type of weather. If there is severe weather on the day of the tour requiring cancellation\, participants will be notified by email 2 – 4 hours before the start of the tour. \nPublic restrooms are available at the marina. \nDirections and Parking Information\nTour-goers will meet at 10.7 Marina located at 314 Arch Street\, Verona\, PA 15147. Please plan to arrive promptly at 9:00 AM. There is free parking at 10.7 Marina. \nThere are no nearby stops for Pittsburgh Regional Transit. \nPhotography\, Videography\, and Other Documentation\nParticipants should be aware that photography\, videorecording\, and/or other documentation of the event by Shiftworks\, other attendees\, or the media may take place during the event. Participants will have an opportunity to indicate if they choose to opt out of being included in event documentation\, and our team will make reasonable efforts to accommodate these preferences. \nAccessibility\nThis tour is very physically engaging and requires participants to be able to enter and exit a kayak safely without significant assistance. Participants will need to be able to follow verbal and visual instruction. Due to the unique nature of the event\, our ability to provide additional accommodations is limited. Please contact the organizer if you have any questions. \nCancellation and Refunds\nIn the event of cancellation due to severe weather\, participants will be refunded to their original form of payment. All other sales are final. \nRegistration\nThere are two ticket types available for this tour: $30.00 with a kayak rental or $20.00 if bringing your own kayak. The button below will redirect you to Eventbrite where you will make your ticket selection and complete your registration. \nRegistration

SUMMARY:Walk & Write: Greenfield with Nancy Krygowski
DESCRIPTION:Join host Sherrie Flick as we hit the hills of Greenfield with guest poet Nancy Krygowski. There will be walking\, writing prompts\, a dive into the act of noticing\, and an opportunity to write with live readings from Nancy as inspiration. This Walk & Write will occur after dusk; headlamps will be provided to all participants. \nAbout the Walk & Write Tour Series\nSince 2021\, local writer Sherrie Flick has led the popular Walk & Write Tour series for Shiftworks. The summer and fall of 2024 marks the fourth season of this successful program. Over the past three seasons\, the Walk & Write Tour series has explored Downtown Pittsburgh\, Hazelwood\, Morningside\, the North Shore\, and the South Side to name a few. \nThese hour-and-a-half tours traverse city neighborhoods and introduce tour-goers to various walking trails and footpaths. This season includes Flick working with guest writers Nancy Krygowski\, Sarah Shotland\, and Robert Yune\, each exploring a different neighborhood and theme\, such as noticing\, inside/outside\, the past isn’t the past\, and immersion. \nAs participants walk these areas\, they will have the opportunity to exercise their creative writing skills\, responding to Flick’s writing prompts at each tour stop. The writing prompts are unique to each tour route and correspond with its surroundings. Each guest writer will read their work aloud during the program. \nAbout Nancy Krygowski\nNancy Krygowski is the author of The Woman in the Corner\, named one of the top 100 (or so) poetry books of 2020 by Library Journal\, and Velocity\, winner of the Agnes Lynch Starrett Prize. She is co-editor of the Pitt Poetry Series and the Pittsburgh Bureau Chief of the tiny weekly newspaper\, Tiny Day. \n\n\n\nAdditional Information\nThere are no public restrooms available along the tour route. The walking route is hilly and may be more strenuous than other Walk & Write Tour routes. All writing abilities are welcome and no previous writing experience is necessary. Participants should bring paper and a writing implement\, wear good walking shoes\, and bring their curiosity to environments that may be new to them. \nThe tour will take place rain or shine. Please be prepared for any type of weather. SUMMARY:Introduction to Community Art
DESCRIPTION:Community-based public art can be a difficult arena for an artist to navigate\, especially with no prior experience. It also can have various models of community participation based on the parameters of the project at-hand. Bronx-based artist Katherine Miranda will share his experience creating the project “Foodprints: Soul of Food” with Deep Routes\, a Brooklyn-based educational food-specific organization\, during their Create Change Fellowship hosted by The Laundromat Project. Joining Miranda for the talk will be Maya Marie S.\, Deep Routes’ founder and lead facilitator. \nThe session will highlight how artists can engage communities that they’re not a part of by working with and listening to people who have already established trust within their own communities. Miranda will talk through his methodology of how he intentionally developed his project that worked in tandem with Deep Routes’ Juneteenth Jubilee. He will also share how artists can work with communities by lending their artistic abilities to the people\, resources\, and organizations already serving their communities; supporting the work that is already in progress. \nThis session is geared toward artists at any stage of their career exploring various approaches to community engagement. \nAbout Katherine Miranda\nKatherine Miranda (they/he) is a Latinx non-binary multidisciplinary artist. Interested in the innate way familial and communal stories are connected to ancestral lineages; Miranda’s artistic practice is one that is deeply rooted in the idea that our histories hold both value and power. Using discarded objects\, most notably Café Bustelo\, they create work that acts as an homage to their family\, community and ancestry. \nMiranda has been awarded several residences and fellowships including the Governors Island Residency with BronxArtSpace (2023)\, the Create Change Fellowship with The Laundromat Project (2023)\, the Artist in the Marketplace Fellowship with the Bronx Museum (2022) and the New York Community Trust Van Lier Fellowship with Wave Hill (2021). They received their BFA from Macaulay Honors at Brooklyn College. \nAbout Maya Marie S.\nMaya Marie S. (she/her) is a Black farmer\, chef\, writer\, and foodways educator from Baltimore\, MD (Piscataway\, Cherokee\, and Lumbee lands) with roots in the Southern US who’s called Brooklyn\, NY (Canarsee\, Lenni Lenape lands) her home for over 10 years. She’s invested in creating accessible spaces for Black and brown people to learn about food and health that center their personal stories and food traditions while reconnecting with the earth and each other. She’s the founder and lead facilitator of Deep Routes\, which is an educational project that uplifts the foodways of African and Indigenous diasporas via workshops\, educational publications\, and media. \nAdditional Information\nSession Recording\nThis session will be recorded and shared with participants on October 18\, 2024. The session will be viewable until January 18\, 2025. \nAccess & Accommodations\nThis session will be held online via Zoom.
