SUMMARY:FroGang Mural Opening Celebration with Artist Rell Rushin
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the opening of Frofully Connected\, a new mural by artist Rell Rushin created in collaboration with FroGang Foundation\, Inc. as part of the Public Art and Communities Program. The artwork celebrates natural Black hair and culture and affirms the importance of self-love\, sisterhood\, confidence\, and connection. The event will feature live poetry\, performance\, music\, refreshments\, and remarks from the artist Rell Rushin as well as the founder of FroGang\, Kelli Shakur. \nThis event will take place at 501 Climax Street\, at the intersection of Climax Street and Curtin Avenue in Beltzhoover on Sunday\, August 20\, 2023 at 3:00 PM. The event is free and open to the public. \nThis project is sponsored by the Public Art and Communities Program of Neighborhood Allies\, Office for Public Art\, and the Borough of Millvale. \nAbout Frofully Connected\nFrofully Connected celebrates natural Black hair and culture and seeks to affirm the importance of self-love\, sisterhood\, confidence\, and connection. The mural speaks to FroGang’s mission of promoting and creating positive self-images for young Black girls so that they can recognize their self-worth and see beauty when they look in the mirror. Artist Rell Rushin developed this artwork in collaboration with the girls of FroGang. \nThe artwork was developed through the Public Art and Communities Program of the Office for Public Art\, Neighborhood Allies\, and the Borough of Millvale. This program supports artists and communities in working together to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic and its intersecting public health crises. Frofully Connected was created in response to FroGang’s defined community need of addressing racism faced by Black women and girls in the Pittsburgh region. \nFroGang chose the location of the artwork in their home neighborhood of Beltzhoover. FroGang’s founder\, Kelli Shakur\, was born and raised in Beltzhoover\, and most of the participating girls are from Beltzhoover and the surrounding Hilltop communities. Frofully Connected is installed on the side of a building that faces a lot that FroGang is in the process of adopting from the City of Pittsburgh. \nFroGang is committed to improving this site to give the community youth a place where they can feel welcomed and see themselves reflected in the artwork. The site is prominently located in the community and is visible upon entry into Beltzhoover from Warrington Avenue. FroGang envisions the lot as a place for the members of both FroGang and the Beltzhoover community to gather for events\, with artwork that celebrates FroGang and their mission. \nTo learn more about this artwork\, please visit Rell Rushin’s project page: https://opapgh.org/our-work/civic-engagement/public-art-and-communities-program/frofully-connected/ \nDirections and Parking Information\nThis event will take place at 501 Climax Street\, Pittsburgh\, PA 15210\, on the corner of Climax Street and Curtin Avenue in Beltzhoover.. \nStreet parking is available in the surrounding area. \nIf taking public transportation\, there is a stop at Climax Street and Estella Avenue that serves route 44; there is a stop at Beltzhoover Avenue and Climax Street that serves routes 44 and 54; and there is a stop at one block away at Beltzhoover Avenue and Freeland Street that serves route 54. SUMMARY:Nine Mile Run Viewfinder Amble and Closing Celebration
DESCRIPTION:The Office for Public Art (OPA) is pleased to announce a new series of artist-designed walking tours during the late summer and early fall of 2023. OPA maintains a long-standing history of hosting and organizing walking tours for the public. To further expand this programmatic offering\, OPA commissioned four Pittsburgh Creative Corps artists to design and experiment with how tour-goers experience the region’s public realm. The artists for the tours are: Ginger Brooks Takahashi\, Erin Mallea\, Jason McKoy\, and Monica McElwain. \nEach tour in the series was conceptualized by the artists and focuses on engaging audience members through artistic practices\, participant observations\, listening\, physical activity\, and games. \nNine Mile Run Viewfinder Amble and Closing Celebration\nArtist Ginger Brooks Takahashi links the sites of her public artwork Nine Mile Run Viewfinder and connects the underground waterway from Nine Mile Run\, to stormwater and sewer systems\, the Monongahela River\, and the water we drink. \nThe tour will follow the original flow of Nine Mile Run and identify the current storm sewer path. Using collective knowledge-building as a strategy to shift the hierarchy of knowledge transmission\, attendees will be encouraged to contribute observations\, stories\, and questions to the group. Participants will visit the three sites of Nine Mile Run Viewfinder where Brooks Takahashi will present scores she’s composed\, invite discussion at each site\, and highlight places that have become significant to her artistic process. The tour will also be a closing celebration for Nine Mile Run Viewfinder\, Brooks Takahashi’s public artwork created in 2021 for the Environment\, Health\, and Public Art Initiative of the Office for Public Art. The tour will conclude with a reception and light refreshments. \n  \nAbout Ginger Brooks Takahashi\nGinger Brooks Takahashi is a transdisciplinary artist and educator. Her performance\, installation\, and site responsive works examine our relationships to the mediums that connect us. These public projects are platforms for intimate interaction\, an extension of feminist and queer praxis. She received her BA from Oberlin College\, 1999; and attended the Whitney Independent Study Program\, 2007. She has exhibited at institutions including Carnegie Museum of Art\, 2020; Oakland Museum of California\, 2019; Jewish Museum\, 2016; Tensta Konsthall\, 2015; Brooklyn Museum\, 2013; Museo Tamayo\, 2010; New Museum\, 2009; amongst others. Most recently\, she created a permanent public artwork for Schenley Park in Pittsburgh and a collaboration with Dana Bishop-Root for Counterpublic\, St Louis 2023. \nDirections and Parking Information\nTour goers will meet at the Braddock Trail Head at Frick Park located at 1400 S. Braddock Avenue at Allenby Avenue in Regent Square where free\, public parking is available. As part of the tour\, a van will transport attendees from the Braddock Trail Head to Hunter Park in Wilkinsburg to see one of the Nine Mile Run Viewfinder sites. \nIf taking public transportation there is a stop at Braddock Avenue + Greendale Avenue that serves routes 61B\, 71\, and P71. \nPreparation\nParticipants should wear comfortable shoes for walking on city streets\, as well as sunscreen and hats\, and should bring drinking water with them. There is a porta-john available in Hunter Park. \nAccessibility\nThis tour is not wheelchair accessible; other accommodations may be available upon request. SUMMARY:Play in peace
DESCRIPTION:Join the Office for Public Art (OPA) in celebrating World Peace Day and welcoming Little Amal to Pittsburgh. \nOPA commissioned Pittsburgh Creative Corps artist Cheryl Capezzuti to design one of five distinct events that will welcome Little Amal to Pittsburgh. Capezzuti worked with various local partners to create an event that will take place on the North Shore Riverfront Park’s Great Lawn on Thursday\, September 21\, 2023 at noon. \nAmal is drawn to a group of children who have gathered on the Great Lawn on the North Shore to celebrate World Peace Day. Capezzuti has also been an Artist-in-Residence at the Pittsburgh International Airport\, where she made parading puppets out of travelers’ discards\, and she’s been commissioned by the City of Pittsburgh to tell its history using giant puppets for the Bicentennial Parade. She teaches at Falk Laboratory School at the University of Pittsburgh where her Giant Puppet Dance Club may be the most unexpected student program. Between parades\, her puppets are housed at the Braddock Carnegie Free Library\, one of Andrew Carnegie’s first libraries\, and can be checked out by anyone with a library card for events\, celebrations and just for fun. She is joined for this production by her long-time collaborator Kellee Van Aken\, a writer\, director and Dean of the School of the Visual Arts and Theater at Seton Hill University. \nLearn more at www.puppetsforpittsburgh.com. \nDirections and Parking Information\nThe Great Lawn\, North Shore Riverfront Park is located between the Carnegie Science Center and Stage AE. SUMMARY:Turtle Cove Kayak Tour
\nTurtle Cove Kayak Tour\nArtist Monica Cervone McElwain\, in collaboration with artist Erin Mallea\, will lead two related kayak tours. Each tour focuses on the Allegheny River and its coves and islands. \nThe first tour will be a kayak trip to a small inlet on the Allegheny River called Turtle Cove. From the launch point\, participants will paddle along the river’s edge while listening to the water’s sounds and looking at nearby sights. The tour will then continue onto Turtle Cove itself\, where participants will see sculptures and artwork created by the Cove’s visitors; these works have changed over time because of weather or manipulations by others\, adding to the artistic nature. Participants will fine tune the site with calmness and focus to look and search for natural and unique findings on the Cove. These findings can be used to add to existing sculptures\, create new ones\, or be brought back to the marina for an art activity. Before the end of the tour\, any non-recyclable trash not used in the sculptures will be picked up and brought back for disposal. \nAbout Monica Cervone McElwain\nMonica Cervone McElwain is a mixed-media artist\, who is constantly enticed by new materials and very experimental in her artmaking. She has recently been exploring needlepoint in her art as a textural layer that travels throughout. Colors and shapes at first look uncomplicated but then develop intricacies through the use of various layers of line\, symbols\, textures or patterns. She is an inspiring muralist and loves to create large pieces throughout the city of Pittsburgh. She is a busy momma of three\, a roller derby enthusiast and full time elementary art teacher. “I am overall a passionate human being\, I surround myself with what I love and want the world to see my art in a colorful and unique way.” \nPreparation\nParticipants should be dressed appropriately for kayaking to Turtle Cove. Participants should wear comfortable\, quick drying/ active clothing that can get wet. A hat\, sunscreen\, and sunglasses are recommended. Wear shoes that are comfortable to walk in and get wet. Participants may want to bring a change of shoes that are safe for walking on trails and uneven terrain. \nPublic restrooms are available at 10.7 Marina. \nKayak Information\nPlease note\, kayakers should be skilled enough to launch their own kayaks and be able to get back on shore without assistance. Attendees are required to wear life vests\, must participate in a short kayak safety training\, and sign a waiver before the meeting begins. \nParticipants may bring their own kayak or rent one on-site at a discounted rate. \nDirections and Parking Information\nTour goers will meet at 10.7 Marina located at 314 Arch St\, Verona\, PA 15147. Please plan to arrive on time for a group briefing on safety and kayak procedures and to ensure that the tour will start on time. \nParking is available at 10.7 Marina. \nAccessibility\nThere are no accessibility accommodations available for this tour. \nRegistration\nThe artist designed tours will occur rain or shine. In the event of cancellation due to severe weather\, registrants will be notified via email up to three hours in advance of the event’s start time. Registrants will be reimbursed for tours that are canceled due to inclement weather. All other tour sales are final. \nThere are two ticket types available for this tour: $20.00 with a kayak rental or $15.00 bringing your own kayak. The button below will redirect you to Eventbrite where you will make your ticket selection and complete your registration. \nRegistration

Each tour focuses on the Allegheny River and its coves and islands. \nArtist Erin Mallea will take participants by kayak to Sycamore Island for a listening walk. Managed by the Allegheny Land Trust\, Sycamore Island is one of the few undeveloped islands in Allegheny County. The island hosts a unique floodplain hardwood forest and presents an opportunity for the public to visit and experience a wild\, natural island within an urban environment. \nParticipants will be led on island walking trails with a series of listening prompts focused on layers of human intervention and natural cycles. Participants will practice redirecting attention\, practicing close listening to distant\, subtle and shifting sounds\, and increasing awareness of our larger sonic environment. \nAbout Erin Mallea\nErin Mallea is a multidisciplinary artist currently based in Pittsburgh\, PA. Her practice explores the past and present of particular microcosms as entry points into larger environmental\, social\, and political conditions. Often public and collaborative in nature\, her work manifests in a range of media including installation\, video\, photography\, writing\, and participatory projects. She has exhibited at galleries\, museums and DIY art spaces nationally and internationally\, sent vibrations from a giant fungus throughout the atmosphere\, and currently publishes Tree News\, a newsletter about trees\, people and places. Erin holds a MFA from Carnegie Mellon University (2019) and is an Assistant Professor of Art at the Pennsylvania State University School of Visual Arts. \nPreparation\nParticipants should be dressed appropriately for kayaking to\, and spending time on\, Sycamore Island. SUMMARY:Write the Neighborhood: Morningside
DESCRIPTION:Since 2021\, local writer Sherrie Flick has led the popular Walk & Write Tour series for the Office for Public Art. The fall of 2023 marks the third season of this successful program\, after two seasons of exploring Downtown Pittsburgh\, Hazelwood\, the North Shore\, and the South Side. \nThese hour-and-a-half tours traverse city neighborhoods connected to\, or nearby water\, and introduce tour-goers to various walking trails and footpaths that run along Pittsburgh’s three rivers and other waterways. \nAs participants walk these areas\, attendees have the opportunity to exercise their creative writing skills as they respond to Flick’s writing prompts at each tour stop. The writing prompts are unique to each tour route and correspond with its surroundings. \nAll writing abilities are welcome and no previous writing experiences is necessary. Please bring paper and a writing implement; wear good walking shoes\, and bring your curiosity to environments that may be new to you. \nWrite the Neighborhood: Morningside\nThe Write the Neighborhood: Morningside Tour denotes a fun shift in Flick’s Walk & Write series. For the first time\, Flick will invite a guest writer to lead the walking tour in a neighborhood of their choice. Flick’s writing prompts will be in response to the guest’s route and selection of readings at each stop. \nThis Walk & Write Tour will introduce visiting writer\, Joy Katz.  Come gather inspiration from Katz’s favorite neighborhood walk. Katz will read aloud at each stop as participants walk (and write) during this tour of Morningside. The tour will be a mostly flat walking surface on sidewalks. \nAbout Joy Katz\n\nJoy Katz loves writing on the shifting border between poetry\, nonfiction\, and memoir. Her latest essay is “Tennis is the Opposite of Death: A Proof\,” in The Paris Review\, a 2022 Best American Essays finalist\, and her latest poetry collection is All You Do Is Perceive\, a National Poetry Series finalist. A Writing Pittsburgh fellow\, she was writer-in-residence at Grasso Sausage\, the last Italian business in Larimer. Honors for her work include National Endowment for the Arts\, Barbara Deming Foundation\, and Stegner fellowships\, and she collaborates in the social practice art collective IfYouReallyLoveMe.org\, whose most recent project was live music for shift workers. Joy teaches off the tenure track in Carlow University’s Madwomen in the Attic writing workshops. \n\nAbout Sherrie Flick\n\n\n\nSherrie Flick is the author of four books\, including her 2018 short story collection Thank Your Lucky Stars (Autumn House Press). Recent work appears in New England Review\, Ploughshares\, and Booth. Co-editor for the 2023 anthology Flash Fiction America (W. W. Norton)\, she also served as series editor for The Best Small Fictions 2018 and is a senior editor at SmokeLong Quarterly. Her debut essay collection\, Homing: Instincts of a Rustbelt Feminist is forthcoming from University of Nebraska Press in 2024. SUMMARY:Art Creep and Crawl
\nArt Creep and Crawl\nParticipants will be taken on a guided tour through Etna and Sharpsburg led by artist Jason McKoy whose recent work We Are Windows was installed in both boroughs. The tour will include stops that are popular points of interest in both Etna and Sharpsburg\, and will encourage attendees to engage with people and places that were significant to McKoy’s development of his artistic project. The tour will end with refreshments. It is intended that the stops remain secretive so that participants can try and guess each location based on riddles that will be emailed to registrants in advance. Tour stops will be revealed during the tour and are intended to create an informative and game-like atmosphere. \nWe Are Windows is an artwork created by Jason McKoy in collaboration with the Etna Community Organization and the Sharpsburg Neighborhood Organization and is sponsored by the Public Art and Communities Program of the Office for Public Art\, Neighborhood Allies\, and the Borough of Millvale. \nAbout Jason McKoy\nJason McKoy is a brand consultant\, ARTvocate\, social innovator\, and weirdo. Living with major depressive disorder has informed how he navigates the world creatively. He is the founder of McKoy Creative\, a warm hug for your business providing creative services from concept to completion that benefit communities. When not making stuff\, he’s either playing video games or sleeping. He hails from NYC. \nPreparation\nParticipants will be emailed a set of riddles where the answers are stops on the tour. The riddles are a fun pre-tour activity where participants can check their answers as the tour moves from stop to stop; tour stops will not be revealed in advance. Participants are encouraged to engage at each stop and\, at the end of the tour\, attendees will have the opportunity to relax with refreshments. Participants will also receive a swag bag from the tour. \nDirections and Parking Information\nThe Etna Park and Community Pool is located at 2 Pine Street\, Etna\, PA 15223. \nUnmetered street parking is available within the vicinity of the park and pool. \nIf taking public transportation\, the park and pool is accessible via bus routes 2 and P13 with a stop at Butler Street and Maplewood. For more information on public transportation\, please visit the Pittsburgh Regional Transit website HERE. \nRegistration\nThis artist-designed tour will occur rain or shine. In the event of severe weather\, registrants will be notified of cancellation via email up to three hours ahead of the event’s start time. Registrants will be reimbursed if this tour is canceled due to inclement weather. All other tour sales are final. \nRegistration for this tour is $10 per person; advance registration is required. To register\, please click on the button below; you will be redirected to Eventbrite where you can complete your registration. \nRegistration
