DESCRIPTION:Join Shiftworks Community + Public Arts for Field Sessions\, an artist information session and social mixer. \nThis annual event brings together artists and creatives from various sectors who are interested in working in the public realm and is open to artists across all disciplines\, especially those with limited or no prior experience in public art. \nField Sessions will be held at Emerald City\, a co-working space that prioritizes Black entrepreneurship and Black professionals in Pittsburgh through resources\, education\, and opportunities. During the event\, attendees will learn about how Shiftworks supports artists and ways to get involved in the public realm. \nRefreshments will be provided. \nAbout Shiftworks Community + Public Arts\nShiftworks Community + Public Arts envisions a region in which the creative practices of artists are fully engaged to collaboratively shape the public realm and catalyze community-led change. DESCRIPTION:Join Pittsburgh Creative Corps artist Christiane Dolores as she hosts this acoustic musical performance series on the last Sunday of every month\, June through August at Mellon Square in Downtown Pittsburgh from 1:00 – 2:30 PM. \nAbout Rumbón de la Calle\nRumbón de la Calle is an ensemble of locally based\, world renowned percussionists and drummers of the African diaspora emulating the community gatherings of their respective countries: Puerto Rico\, Republic of Congo\, Cuba\, and the United States. Featuring core drummers: Elie Kihonia\, Hugo Cruz\, Kelley E Parker\, and Geña. Each performance will feature a special guest and is free to attend. \nPlease note that all musical instruments are to be handled only by professional musicians. \nThis performance series is presented by the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership and Shiftworks and is supported by the City of Pittsburgh with funding through the American Rescue Plan Act. \nAbout the Core Drummers\nElie Kihonia\nElie Kihonia is the founder of Afrika Yetu and UMOJA African Arts Company. He was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire) and exposed to both traditional and neo-traditional African music and dance at an early age. Seeing the need to introduce and promote Africa’s rich and diverse history\, culture\, and traditions through song and dance\, Mr. Kihonia became a co-founder of UMOJA African Arts Company\, in order to create an organization in the U.S. to unify and promote the arts of diverse African cultures. He performs\, teaches\, choreographs\, writes\, and produces multi-cultural productions internationally. \nHugo Cruz\nHugo Alexander Cruz Machado is a Cuban-born\, award winning\, international drummer and composer who has performed in South Korea\, Spain\, Sweden\, Mexico\, Chile\, Venezuela\, and the United States. Hugo is the leader of the group Caminos\, who have made appearances at the Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival 2019\, Fábrica de Artes in Havana\, Cuba\, First Night Pittsburgh 2020\, City of Asylum\, The Carnegie Museum\, Pittsburgh Cultural Trust events\, The Frick Museum\, Con Alma\, and Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh\, among others. \nHe is a graduate of the Instituto Superior de Artes\, the leading arts university of Cuba\, and in 2014\, won the award as the “best drummer” at the international Festival del Tambor Guillermo Barreto in Memoriam in Havana\, Cuba. \nKelley E Parker\nKelly E Parker\, born in Portsmouth\, VA\, raised in Washington\, PA\, and became aware in Pittsburgh\, PA\, where she currently resides with her domestic partner Lori Russo and their two dogs and three cats. She is the mother of a grown son and many grandchildren. She founded ABAFASI in 2009 an all female hand Drumming ensemble\, focusing on West African rhythms. In 2022 she became a guest artist with Rumbon De La Calle. She is the percussionist for Lori Russo and The Uppercuts\, playing Originals\, Blues\, Soul\, R &B. She is an African Drum maker\, jewelry maker\, crochet artist\, published poet and not well behaved womyn. \nGeña\nGeña is a Puerto Rican musician residing in Pittsburgh. She is a lead member of Geña y Peña\, Qlitterati and multiple projects in Pittsburgh\, and was the band leader and lead singer of Machete Kisumontao and other musical projects in New York City and Puerto Rico. She has performed with countless Pittsburgh-based and international musicians. \nGeña envisioned Rumbón de la Calle over a decade ago\, inspired by the many gatherings of natural percussionists in her native Puerto Rico and in New York City’s Central Park\, where she witnessed an amalgam of musicians playing their ancestral rhythms from the African diaspora. Pittsburgh needed to be exposed to this magical experience\, and in her musical trajectory\, while performing with some of the most talented\, authentic percussionists in town\, she began making a mental list and planned the execution of this dream project. \nDirections and Parking\nMellon Square is located in Downtown Pittsburgh\, bordered by Sixth Avenue\, Oliver Avenue\, Smithfield Street\, and William Penn Place. DESCRIPTION:Shiftworks is hosting an in-person artist information session for those interested in applying for the mural opportunity with Citizens Live at The Wylie\, Pittsburgh’s newest music venue located in the Lower Hill. During this session\, Shiftworks staff will go over the application process and answer any questions artists may have regarding the project or process. \nAbout the Opportunity\nShiftworks Community + Public Arts has been hired by Live Nation to manage artist selection and implementation of a new mural for Citizens Live at The Wylie. A joint venture of Fenway Sports Group and Live Nation\, the 4\,000 capacity venue is named in tribute to Wylie Avenue\, a historic center for music and nightlife in the Hill District. The new facility is scheduled to open in the latter half of 2026. \nAbout Live Nation\nCitizens Live at The Wylie is operated by Live Nation. SUMMARY:Walk & Write: Homewood Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:Homewood Cemetery\, founded in 1878\, nestled into the belly of Point Breeze will be our October destination for this year’s Walk & Write. Historian and archivist Jennie Benford will guide us through its lush\, historic grounds\, shedding light on little known facts\, delving deep into local history\, and showing us the ways in which the cemetery lends itself to gossip. Her insights\, combined with Sherrie Flick’s prompts will help participants write worlds seen\, unseen\, and imagined. \nAbout Walk & Writes\nSince 2021\, local writer Sherrie Flick has led the popular Walk & Write Tour series for Shiftworks Community + Public Arts. These hour-and-a-half tours traverse city neighborhoods and introduce tour-goers to various walking trails and footpaths. As participants walk these areas\, they have the opportunity to exercise their creative writing skills\, responding to Flick’s writing prompts at each tour stop. The writing prompts are unique to each tour route and correspond with its surroundings. \nAbout Jennie Benford\nJennie Benford is the Local & Family History Librarian at the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. She has been affiliated with The Homewood Cemetery\, in one capacity or another\, for over 30 years. She was University Archivist at CMU\, 125th Anniversary historic researcher for Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh\, a Clayton Docent at The Frick\, Pittsburgh Museums and Gardens\, and a founding member of guerrilla women’s history action collective LUPEC (Ladies United for the Preservation of Endangered Cocktails). \nAbout Sherrie Flick\nSherrie Flick is the author of 6 books\, including the essay collection Homing: Instincts of a Rustbelt Feminist. She’s the recipient of a 2023 Creative Development Award and a Writing Pittsburgh Fellowship from the Creative Nonfiction Foundation. She teaches in the low-res MFA program at West Virginia Wesleyan College and is a member of the Pittsburgh Creative Corps. She lives in Pittsburgh. \nAdditional Information\nRegistrants should plan to arrive by 9:50 AM and check-in with Shiftworks staff at the main entrance to the cemetery; the tour will begin promptly at 10:00 AM. \nAll writing abilities are welcome and no previous writing experience is necessary. Bring a notebook\, a writing implement\, and curiosity for new places and experiences. \nPlease wear good walking shoes and dress appropriately for the weather. \nAccess & Accommodations\nThis event will be held in-person and requires light physical activity. Homewood Cemetery is not wheelchair-accessible. The tour will traverse both paved and unpaved roads\, as well as grassy lots. Attendees should additionally expect to walk up and down hills as part of the tour. \nThis event will be held outdoors at the Homewood Cemetery. There is free parking on-site near the cemetery office. If there is a funeral service the day of the tour\, parking is available elsewhere in the cemetery.
