SUMMARY:Turtle Cove Kayak Tour
DESCRIPTION:This tour will be a kayak trip to a small inlet on the Allegheny River called Turtle Cove. From the launch point\, participants will paddle along the river’s edge while listening to the water’s sounds and looking at nearby sights. The tour will then continue onto Turtle Cove itself\, where participants will notice sculptures created by the Cove’s visitors. These works have changed over time\, manipulated by weather or others\, adding to their artistic nature. Participants will consider the theme RECYCLE\, REUSE\, RENEW as they collaborate to make one new sculpture\, calmly fine-tuning the site as they search for natural and unique findings from the inlet. Before the end of the tour\, any non-recyclable trash not used for the sculptures will be picked up and brought back for disposal. \nAbout the Kayak Tour Series\nShiftworks Community + Public Arts maintains a long-standing history of hosting and organizing walking tours for the public. To further expand this programmatic offering\, Shiftworks commissioned Pittsburgh Creative Corps artists Erin Mallea and Monica Cervone McElwain to design and experiment with how tour-goers experience the region’s public realm. \nThis series of kayak tours was conceptualized by the artists and focuses on engaging audience members through artmaking\, participant observations\, listening activities\, and walking. \nAbout Monica Cervone McElwain\nMonica Cervone McElwain is a mixed-media artist\, who is constantly enticed by new materials and very experimental in her artmaking. She has recently been exploring needlepoint in her art as a textural layer that travels throughout. Colors and shapes at first look uncomplicated but then develop intricacies through the use of various layers of line\, symbols\, textures or patterns. She is an inspiring muralist and loves to create large pieces throughout the city of Pittsburgh. She is a busy momma of three\, a roller derby enthusiast and full time elementary art teacher. “I am overall a passionate human being\, I surround myself with what I love and want the world to see my art in a colorful and unique way.” \n\n\nAdditional Information\nThis is a beginner level kayak tour\, appropriate for ages 18 +. Participants will spend approximately 10 minutes kayaking at an easy pace to Turtle Cove and approximately 15 minutes to return to the marina. Please note\, kayakers should be skilled enough to launch their own kayaks and be able to get back on shore without assistance. \nAttendees are required to wear life vests (which will be provided on-site)\, must participate in a short kayak safety training\, and sign a waiver before the tour begins. Please arrive promptly at 9:00 AM to undergo the short training and prepare to launch. Tour-goers will be on the water by 9:30 AM. \nParticipants should be dressed appropriately for kayaking to\, and spending time on\, Turtle Cove. Please wear comfortable\, quick-drying/active clothing that can get wet. It is recommended to bring a dry change of clothes to enjoy the marina and food after the tour. A hat\, sunscreen\, and sunglasses are recommended. Wear walking sandals or shoes that are comfortable and able to get wet\, and are safe for walking on uneven terrain.  Be sure to check the weather conditions the morning of the tour and bring appropriate layers. \nThis tour will take place rain or shine. Please be prepared for any type of weather. If there is severe weather on the day of the tour requiring cancellation\, participants will be notified by email 2 – 4 hours before the start of the tour. \nPublic restrooms are available at the marina. \nArtist Monica Cervone McElwain will be bringing drawing paper\, pencils\, markers\, and a polaroid camera for participants to use. We ask all attendees to NOT bring their own art materials so that we can be mindful of possible waste at Turtle Cove. \nDirections and Parking Information\nTour-goers will meet at 10.7 Marina located at 314 Arch Street\, Verona\, PA 15147. Please plan to arrive promptly at 9:00 AM. There is free parking at 10.7 Marina. \nThere are no nearby stops for Pittsburgh Regional Transit. \nPhotography\, Videography\, and Other Documentation\nParticipants should be aware that photography\, videorecording\, and/or other documentation of the event by Shiftworks\, other attendees\, or the media may take place during the event. Participants will have an opportunity to indicate if they choose to opt out of being included in event documentation\, and our team will make reasonable efforts to accommodate these preferences. \nAccessibility\nThis tour is very physically engaging and requires participants to be able to enter and exit a kayak safely without significant assistance. Participants will need to be able to follow verbal and visual instruction. Due to the unique nature of the event\, our ability to provide additional accommodations is limited. Please contact the organizer if you have any questions. \nCancellation and Refunds\nIn the event of cancellation due to severe weather\, participants will be refunded to their original form of payment. All other sales are final. \nRegistration\nThere are two ticket types available for this tour: $30.00 with a kayak rental or $20.00 if bringing your own kayak. The button below will redirect you to Eventbrite where you will make your ticket selection and complete your registration. \nRegistration\n  \n

SUMMARY:In the Field: Research & Ideation
DESCRIPTION:In the Field begins at artist Tim Engelhardt’s studio at Radiant Hall: Homewood. Tim will tackle the topic of research and ideation for a commissioned mural\, from the initial concept submission for the Request for Proposals to finalizing the shop drawings for the fabricator. Tim will shed light on some of the elements of conceiving a public artwork that go unnoticed by the general public\, such as client and community engagement\, research\, feedback sessions\, and design alterations. \nAbout In the Field\nNow in its second year\, In the Field takes participants through the artist’s process\, from an artist’s perspective. From research and design ideation\, to working with fabricators and implementation of the artwork\, In the Field breaks down the public art process so that artists and the general public gain insight into how an artwork becomes a part of the public realm. \nThis year\, artist Tim Engelhardt will lead the series\, presenting the artistic process and resulting large mixed-media mural Above Stage\, commissioned by Pittsburgh CLO for the entryway to their campus on CLO Academy Way in Downtown Pittsburgh. Each session of In the Field will be on-site at a different location significant to the project and will highlight a different step in Engelhardt’s process of creating the artwork. \nAbout Tim Engelhardt\nTim Engelhardt is a visual artist residing in Pittsburgh\, PA. Throughout the past eight years\, Tim has worked with businesses\, communities\, nonprofits\, and residences to create a wide range of work that meets the creative goals of each client. Over the course of the past several years\, Tim’s career in art has blossomed\, taking him to Las Vegas\, Reno\, and Virginia Beach to create murals for local businesses\, a project with the URA in Arnold\, PA\, a 6\,000 sq. ft. mural for the Davis Companies at their apartment building Terminal 21 in Pittsburgh\, a painted pathway for UPMC Children’s hospital and most recently\, overseeing the installation of murals at Kennywood amusement park. Tim’s ability to diversify his styles has given him a wide window of opportunities and he has seized upon them to great success. In addition to his public artwork and murals\, Tim maintains a home studio as well as space in Radiant Hall in Homewood where he is developing a body of abstract works. \nAdditional Information\nAccess & Accommodations\nThis session will be held indoors at Radiant Hall’s Homewood location. The studio is located on the second floor of the building. The Homewood studios are located on Susquehanna Street between Brushton Avenue and Rosedale Street. A free parking lot is located on the east side of the building. The lot has five accessible parking spaces located on the left of the ramp entrance to the building. The location is also served by public transit (see “Parking and Transportation” below). \nThe space is accessed by one passenger elevator and two freight elevators. The studios\, pathways\, and common spaces are all wheelchair accessible. Facilities include multi-stall\, single-gender restrooms located on each floor of the building. The restrooms are designated as wheelchair accessible. The restrooms on the 1st floor can be accessed by a push-button motorized door. It should be noted that the 2nd floor restroom doors lack full maneuvering clearance and assistance may be needed to exit. Please note that masks are not required for attending in-person events but will be made available upon request. We ask that attendees respect the health and safety of others; if you are sick\, please stay home. \nTo request additional accommodations for this event\, please submit your request in writing on the event registration form. SUMMARY:Sycamore Island Kayak Tour
DESCRIPTION:Artist Erin Mallea will take participants by kayak to Sycamore Island for a listening walk. Managed by the Allegheny Land Trust\, Sycamore Island hosts a significant floodplain hardwood forest and presents an opportunity for the public to visit and experience a woodland that is imperiled in Pennsylvania. Participants will be led on island walking trails with a series of listening prompts\, where they will practice redirecting their attention by closely listening to distant\, subtle\, and shifting sounds\, increasing awareness of the larger sonic environment. \nAbout Erin Mallea\nErin Mallea is a multidisciplinary artist currently based in Pittsburgh\, PA. Her practice explores the past and present of particular microcosms as entry points into larger environmental\, social\, and political conditions. Often public and collaborative in nature\, her work manifests in a range of media including installation\, video\, photography\, writing\, and participatory projects. She has exhibited at galleries\, museums and DIY art spaces nationally and internationally\, sent vibrations from a giant fungus throughout the atmosphere\, and currently publishes Tree News\, a newsletter about trees\, people and places. Erin holds a MFA from Carnegie Mellon University (2019) and is an Assistant Professor of Art at the Pennsylvania State University School of Visual Arts. \n\n\nAdditional Information\nWhile previous kayaking experience isn’t necessary\, this is an intermediate level route\, appropriate for ages 18 +. Kayaking to Sycamore island will take approximately 20 minutes\, and participants should be prepared for a longer return trip upstream. The return trip can take 30 minutes depending on the current and wind conditions. \nParticipants should be dressed appropriately for kayaking to\, and spending time on\, Sycamore Island. Please wear comfortable\, quick-drying/active clothing that can get wet. It is recommended to bring a dry change of clothes to enjoy the marina and food after the tour. A hat\, sunscreen\, and sunglasses are recommended. Wear walking sandals or shoes that are comfortable and able to get wet\, and are safe for walking on trails and uneven terrain. The trails at Sycamore Island are cleared and maintained\, however\, there can be poison ivy off trail. Socks can be helpful for this if you are wearing sandals. \nRegistration

SUMMARY:Walk & Write: Schenley Park with Sherrie Flick
DESCRIPTION:Pittsburgh’s city parks are amazing spaces to explore with creating in mind. Immerse yourself in writing while we walk the trickling waterways of Schenley Park with writer Sherrie Flick. We’ll think about both the chaotic and calm worlds on top\, under\, and hanging over the park’s meandering stream. Headlamps will be provided for this tour. \nAbout the Walk & Write Tour Series\nSince 2021\, local writer Sherrie Flick has led the popular Walk & Write Tour series for Shiftworks. The summer and fall of 2024 marks the fourth season of this successful program. Over the past three seasons\, the Walk & Write Tour series has explored Downtown Pittsburgh\, Hazelwood\, Morningside\, the North Shore\, and the South Side to name a few. \nThese hour-and-a-half tours traverse city neighborhoods and introduce tour-goers to various walking trails and footpaths. This season includes Flick working with guest writers Nancy Krygowski\, Sarah Shotland\, and Robert Yune\, each exploring a different neighborhood and theme\, such as noticing\, inside/outside\, the past isn’t the past\, and immersion. \nAs participants walk these areas\, they will have the opportunity to exercise their creative writing skills\, responding to Flick’s writing prompts at each tour stop. The writing prompts are unique to each tour route and correspond with its surroundings. Each guest writer will read their work aloud during the program. \nAbout Sherrie Flick\n\nSherrie Flick is the author of a novel\, two short story collections\, and the essay collection Homing (University of Nebraska Press\, 2024). A third short story collection is forthcoming from Autumn House Press in 2025. She served as co-editor for the anthology Flash Fiction America (W. W. Norton). She loves leading writing sessions in unlikely places. She lives in the South Side Slopes of Pittsburgh. \n\n\n\nAdditional Information\nThere are no public restrooms available along the tour route. The walking route is hilly\, like a hike\, with uneven terrain and may be more strenuous than other Walk & Write Tour routes. All writing abilities are welcome and no previous writing experience is necessary. Participants should bring paper and a writing implement\, wear good walking shoes\, and bring their curiosity to environments that may be new to them. \nThe tour will take place rain or shine. Please be prepared for any type of weather. If there is severe weather on the day of the tour requiring cancellation\, participants will be notified by email 2 – 4 hours in advance of the tour start time. \nMeeting Location\nBartlett Playground\, Hobart Street\, Pittsburgh\, PA 15217. Participants should plan to arrive by 6:50 PM to check in with a Shiftworks staff member. The tour will begin promptly at 7:00 PM. \nParking and Transportation\nStreet parking is available within the vicinity. If taking public transportation\, there is a Pittsburgh Regional Transit stop at Hobart Street and Greenfield Road that serves routes 65 and 93. SUMMARY:In the Field: Fabrication
DESCRIPTION:The second In the Field session will be held at Shiftworks’ offices in East Liberty. Artist Tim Engelhardt will be joined by arts administrator and public art consultant Morton Brown to discuss the various elements and players that make a mural project possible. Brown and Engelhardt will also cover the various materials and approaches to mural making and installation. This session is appropriate for artists\, art administrators\, and those interested in commissioning an artist for a mural project. \nAbout Morton Brown\nMorton Brown is an artist\, teacher\, and public art consultant operating in Pittsburgh\, PA. His professional areas of expertise include managing conservation of outdoor works of art; managing and creating new commissions of public art; artist selection and fabrication; and facilitating collaborative art-making processes with artists\, architects\, community and commissioning agents. Morton is also a part- time faculty member of Robert Morris University\, teaching history of visual communications\, foundation drawing\, and 2D and 3D design courses since 2020. \nOriginally from Arkansas\, Morton completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Central Arkansas in 1996. He earned his MFA in painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia\, while working as a mural artist with the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program – completing two murals before moving to Pittsburgh in 2001. From 2003 to 2007\, he helped create and administer the Sprout Public Art Program\, a program of the nonprofit Sprout Fund\, in which local artists were hired to paint 35 community murals throughout the region. \nFrom 2009-2015\, he served as the Public Art Manager of the City of Pittsburgh.
