DESCRIPTION:Shiftworks is hosting an in-person artist information session for those interested in applying for the mural opportunity with Citizens Live at The Wylie\, Pittsburgh’s newest music venue located in the Lower Hill. During this session\, Shiftworks staff will go over the application process and answer any questions artists may have regarding the project or process. \nAbout the Opportunity\nShiftworks Community + Public Arts has been hired by Live Nation to manage artist selection and implementation of a new mural for Citizens Live at The Wylie. A joint venture of Fenway Sports Group and Live Nation\, the 4\,000 capacity venue is named in tribute to Wylie Avenue\, a historic center for music and nightlife in the Hill District. The new facility is scheduled to open in the latter half of 2026. \nAbout Live Nation\nCitizens Live at The Wylie is operated by Live Nation. SUMMARY:Walk & Write: Homewood Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:Homewood Cemetery\, founded in 1878\, nestled into the belly of Point Breeze will be our October destination for this year’s Walk & Write. Historian and archivist Jennie Benford will guide us through its lush\, historic grounds\, shedding light on little known facts\, delving deep into local history\, and showing us the ways in which the cemetery lends itself to gossip. Her insights\, combined with Sherrie Flick’s prompts will help participants write worlds seen\, unseen\, and imagined. \nAbout Walk & Writes\nSince 2021\, local writer Sherrie Flick has led the popular Walk & Write Tour series for Shiftworks Community + Public Arts. These hour-and-a-half tours traverse city neighborhoods and introduce tour-goers to various walking trails and footpaths. As participants walk these areas\, they have the opportunity to exercise their creative writing skills\, responding to Flick’s writing prompts at each tour stop. The writing prompts are unique to each tour route and correspond with its surroundings. \nAbout Jennie Benford\nJennie Benford is the Local & Family History Librarian at the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. She has been affiliated with The Homewood Cemetery\, in one capacity or another\, for over 30 years. She was University Archivist at CMU\, 125th Anniversary historic researcher for Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh\, a Clayton Docent at The Frick\, Pittsburgh Museums and Gardens\, and a founding member of guerrilla women’s history action collective LUPEC (Ladies United for the Preservation of Endangered Cocktails). \nAbout Sherrie Flick\nSherrie Flick is the author of 6 books\, including the essay collection Homing: Instincts of a Rustbelt Feminist. She’s the recipient of a 2023 Creative Development Award and a Writing Pittsburgh Fellowship from the Creative Nonfiction Foundation. She teaches in the low-res MFA program at West Virginia Wesleyan College and is a member of the Pittsburgh Creative Corps. She lives in Pittsburgh. \nAdditional Information\nRegistrants should plan to arrive by 9:50 AM and check-in with Shiftworks staff at the main entrance to the cemetery; the tour will begin promptly at 10:00 AM. \nAll writing abilities are welcome and no previous writing experience is necessary. Bring a notebook\, a writing implement\, and curiosity for new places and experiences. \nPlease wear good walking shoes and dress appropriately for the weather. \nAccess & Accommodations\nThis event will be held in-person and requires light physical activity. Homewood Cemetery is not wheelchair-accessible. The tour will traverse both paved and unpaved roads\, as well as grassy lots. There is free parking on-site near the cemetery office. If there is a funeral service the day of the tour\, parking is available elsewhere in the cemetery. SUMMARY:Cantini on Campus: Public Art Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a walking tour through Pitt’s campus to see iconic and lesser-known artworks by local artist and founder of Pitt’s Studio Arts Department\, Virgil Cantini (1919 – 2009). The tour features commissioned work for the Barco Law Building\, in addition to sculptures and large enamel murals located outdoors and inside of locations such as Hillman Library and Posvar Hall. The Cantini on Campus tour concludes at the University Art Gallery (UAG) where tour-goers will see the student-curated exhibition\, Earth and Ether: The Art of Lucille and Virgil Cantini. The tour will be led by Pitt students Louise Matthews and Shawn Simmons. \nCantini on Campus: Public Art Walking Tour is co-sponsored by Pitt UAG and Shiftworks Community + Public Arts. \nAdditional Information\nTour Information\nParticipants will meet in front of the School of Public Health\, located at 130 De Soto Street Pittsburgh\, PA 15261. Two student docents will be waiting for participants outside of the building and will be wearing tour-related buttons. \nPlease plan to arrive 10 – 15 minutes early to check-in with tour staff. \nThis tour will take place rain or shine. Registrants will be notified by email 2 – 4 hours in advance of the tour’s start time if the tour is being cancelled due to weather. \nAccessibility & Accommodations\nThis tour will navigate indoor and outdoor spaces; please dress accordingly and wear comfortable shoes. \nThe walking route is rated as easy\, mostly going downhill. However\, it is important to note that many of the pedestrian walkways have been rerouted during ongoing construction and portions of the route will require navigating unmarked\, unpaved\, or uneven sidewalks\, which are not wheelchair accessible. The tour also requires entering and exiting buildings\, which are accessible. SUMMARY:Stained Glass Tour
DESCRIPTION:The Stained Glass Tour of First Presbyterian Church will lead participants through the church’s main sanctuary to see the 14 distinguished memorial stained-glass windows designed and installed by Tiffany Studios and J & R Lamb Studios. The tour will also include other areas of the church to see the Medallion window by William Willet\, and the Stem of Jesse window in the rear of the chapel produced by Clayton and Bell. The tour will be led by architectural historian Jesse Belfast\, and Kirk Weaver\, owner of Pittsburgh Stained Glass Studios. During the last half-hour\, participants will have time to spend time in the church to have a more in-depth look at the stained glass. \nPhoto by Tom Little \nAccess & Accommodations\nThe majority of this event will be held indoors at First Presbyterian Church\, located at 320 Sixth Avenue\, Pittsburgh\, PA 15222. A short portion of the tour will take place outside; please dress accordingly and wear comfortable shoes.  \nThe first floor of the church (including restrooms) is fully accessible. The accessible entrance to the church is located on the rear (Oliver Avenue) side of the building. This entrance is level with the ground\, but is accessed by the curb cut on the sidewalk along Oliver Avenue. All of the interior and exterior doors are manually operated\, with no push-button access. Shiftworks staff will be available to assist with opening and holding doors. Upon entering the church\, take the elevator up to floor 1 and exit the stairwell to the church lounge. Proceed through the lounge\, then turn left\, passing by the large 30-foot wood doors\, and enter the sanctuary through the double doors on the left. There is a ramp at this set of doors. Please note that this ramp is steep and may be difficult to ascend if using a manual wheelchair. The accessible restroom is located on the left just before the double doors to the sanctuary.  \nPart of the tour will go into the balconies\, which can only be accessed via stairs and are not wheelchair accessible. The Willet Window is located in the organ loft\, which can also only be accessed by stairs. These stairs are steep\, and the space may be difficult to access for those with limited mobility. \nTo request additional accommodations for this event\, please submit your request in writing on the event registration form. A Shiftworks staff member will follow up with you directly about your request. We will attempt to implement requests for reasonable accommodations to the best of our ability\, but cannot guarantee that all requests will be met.
