DESCRIPTION:Lawyer\, jazz pianist\, college professor\, and long-time arts advocate David Gurwin will explain the different types of contracts involved with public art projects and other contracts that artists may encounter while working with clients. \nAbout David Gurwin\nDavid A. Gurwin is an attorney and Shareholder with the national law firm of Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney PC\, resident in the Firm’s Pittsburgh\, Pennsylvania and New York\, New York offices. Mr. Gurwin is an Adjunct Professor at Carnegie Mellon University’s Heinz College where he teaches a course on Law & the Arts. He also is a Guest Lecturer at Carnegie Mellon University’s Entertainment Technology Center; Duquesne University’s Mary Pappert School of Music; and Robert Morris University’s Film Department. \nA professional jazz pianist himself\, he chairs the Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney’s Entertainment\, Media & Sports Law Group. But\, how does someone best prepare for an interview like this? Pittsburgh-based public art consultant Renee Piechocki will lead this discussion to cover the basics of how to have a successful interview. \nAbout Renee Piechocki\nRenee Piechocki is an artist and public art consultant. Currently\, she is working with several clients to plan and implement public art projects in transportation settings\, and collaborating with Nadine Wasserman to travel their project Compass Roses: Maps by Artists to different communities in the United States. She received the Public Art Network Award in Leadership in 2018. In 2019\, she embarked on a Grown Up Gap Year\, traveling and living in five countries and publishing #publicartpostcards on Instagram. Now that she is back in Pittsburgh\, she is working from home\, looking at photos from her trip\, working in her studio\, and thinking of ways to present artists work in the public realm during the pandemic. SUMMARY:Bekezela Mguni and Mi'Jan Celie on After Dinner Conversations
DESCRIPTION:Join host Bekezela Mguni and her guest Mi’Jan Celie as they discuss the theme of storytelling on the next After Dinner Conversations\, presented by OPA. \nBekezela Mguni is a queer Trinidadian artist\, librarian\, and educator. She has over 15 years of community organizing experience in the Reproductive Justice movement and holds an MLIS from the University of Pittsburgh. Mguni launched The Black Unicorn Project\, a Black feminist community library\, archive and cultural intervention that centers and celebrates the literary contributions of Black women and Black TLGBQIA+ people. She is currently an artist in residence at Artists Image Resource and the librarian in residence at the Pittsburgh International Airport. Mguni also serves as the Education Program Director at Dreams of Hope which affirms the voices and leadership of LGBTQ youth through the arts. \nMi’Jan Celie Tho-Biaz\, Ed.D.\, is a cultural leader\, oral historian\, and restorative storyteller who shares narratives of personal transformation and community change. As the founder of the New Mexico Women of Color Nonprofit Leadership Initiative\, she works with communities across the themes of sovereignty\, transformation\, healing\, and equity. Celie is also a public speaker and has performed at Carnegie Hall\, the Institute of American Indian Arts\, and SXSW. Celie designed and led the Steinem Initiative’s public policy digital storytelling pilot at Smith College\, was a visiting scholar at Columbia University\, and served as a New Mexico Humanities Council Scholar. Her collaborations include serving as a 2019-2020 Kennedy Center Citizen Artist\, a BMW Foundation Responsible Leader\, and an Encore Public Voices Fellow. \nAfter Dinner Conversations is an Instagram Live series\, made possible by a grant from the Pennsylvania Humanities Council. DESCRIPTION:Arts administrator Christian Guerra will discuss best practices for selecting artists for future public art projects. Topics will include: establishing core principles in a Request for Proposals (RFP); demonstrating how well-defined core principles lead to better collaborations; listening to artists; and incorporating community feedback to enhance the artist selection process. \nThis session will be ideal for both artists and arts administrators who regularly navigate the selection process and who would like to learn how to better evaluate potential art opportunities. \nAbout Christian Guerra\nChristian “Chris” Guerra (she/her/ hers) is an activist\, librarian\, and historian- all of which have shaped her as an arts administrator. Her passion for social justice\, belief in public service\, and skills in making connections motivate her practice. She is most driven when she is working to prioritizing cultural equity and acting as the liaison to partners\, communities\, and artists. Chris is a graduate of The University of Texas as a fellow and scholar with the Intelligence Community Center of Academic Excellence. She earned her MLS with a focus on Archives & Cultural Institutions from Simmons College. She is a NALAC Leadership Fellow promoting and cultivating the BIPOC arts field. DESCRIPTION:Explore current trends in public art throughout the United States and around the world with guest speaker Kendal Henry\, the Director of New York City’s Department of Cultural Affairs Percent for Art Program. This dynamic talk will expose artists to the multitude of public artworks being created in our current time\, with special emphasis on works that highlight social engagement\, civic pride\, and economic development. \nAbout Kendal Henry\nKendal Henry is an artist and curator who lives in New York City and has specialized in the field of public art for over 30 years. He illustrates that public art can be used as a tool for social engagement\, civic pride and economic development through the projects and programs he’s initiated in the US and internationally. \nHe’s currently the Director of NYC’s Department of Cultural Affairs Percent for Art Program and an adjunct professor at New York University’s Steinhardt School of Culture\, Education and Human Development.. Kendal served as the Director of Culture and Economic Development for the City of Newburgh\, NY where he created the region’s first Percent for Art Program. Prior to that post he was Manager of Arts Programs at the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Arts for Transit for eleven years. SUMMARY:Njaimeh Njie and Hourglass on After Dinner Conversations
DESCRIPTION:Join host Njaimeh Njie and her guest Hourglass discussing the theme of storytelling on the next After Dinner Conversations\, presented by OPA. \nNjaimeh Njie is a photographer\, filmmaker\, and multimedia producer. Her work documents contemporary Black life. Njie’s work has been featured in CityLab\, Belt Magazine\, and the Carnegie Museum of Art’s Storyboard Blog. She has presented at TEDxPittsburghWomen\, Harvard University\, and Carnegie Mellon University. Njie is the recipient of several awards namely\, the 2019 Duquesne University/August Wilson House Fellow\, and the 2018 Emerging Artist of the Year by the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts. Njie earned her B.A. in film and media studies in 2010 from Washington University in St. Louis. \n“Think outside the clock.” This self-dubbed phrase has been the motivation behind Hourglass’ approach since touching the turntables in Atlanta over five years ago.
