DESCRIPTION:Morton Brown\, a local public art aficionado\, will take us on a walking tour to explore the history and public art of one of the most beloved Pittsburgh neighborhoods – East Liberty. \nMorton is an independent art consultant and served as the City of Pittsburgh’s Public Art Manager from 2009 – 2015. He has many interesting\, first-hand stories to share regarding the development and preservation of public art in East Liberty\, such as the first artist-designed pedestrian bridge in Pittsburgh\, Shady Liberty\, by Sheila Klein; the Joy of Life sculpture by Virgil Cantini; Leslie Ansley’s Convergence; To Be Human\, by Ann Lewis\, on the façade of Duolingo HQ; and Thaddeus Mosley’s sculptures at Eastside Bond Plaza. \nPlease join us for this one-of-a-kind tour! \nAccess & Accommodations\nThe tour will meet in front of the main entrance of East Liberty Presbyterian Church\, located at 116 S. SUMMARY:Stained Glass Tour
DESCRIPTION:The Stained Glass Tour of First Presbyterian Church will lead participants through the church’s main sanctuary to see the 14 distinguished memorial stained-glass windows designed and installed by Tiffany Studios and J & R Lamb Studios. The tour will also include other areas of the church to see the Medallion window by William Willet\, and the Stem of Jesse window in the rear of the chapel produced by Clayton and Bell. The tour will be led by architectural historian Jesse Belfast\, and Kirk Weaver\, owner of Pittsburgh Stained Glass Studios. During the last half-hour\, participants will have time to spend time in the church to have a more in-depth look at the stained glass. \nPhoto by Tom Little \nAccess & Accommodations\nThe majority of this event will be held indoors at First Presbyterian Church\, located at 320 Sixth Avenue\, Pittsburgh\, PA 15222. A short portion of the tour will take place outside; please dress accordingly and wear comfortable shoes.  \nThe first floor of the church (including restrooms) is fully accessible. The accessible entrance to the church is located on the rear (Oliver Avenue) side of the building. This entrance is level with the ground\, but is accessed by the curb cut on the sidewalk along Oliver Avenue. All of the interior and exterior doors are manually operated\, with no push-button access. Shiftworks staff will be available to assist with opening and holding doors. Upon entering the church\, take the elevator up to floor 1 and exit the stairwell to the church lounge. Proceed through the lounge\, then turn left\, passing by the large 30-foot wood doors\, and enter the sanctuary through the double doors on the left. There is a ramp at this set of doors. Please note that this ramp is steep and may be difficult to ascend if using a manual wheelchair. The accessible restroom is located on the left just before the double doors to the sanctuary.  \nPart of the tour will go into the balconies\, which can only be accessed via stairs and are not wheelchair accessible. The Willet Window is located in the organ loft\, which can also only be accessed by stairs. These stairs are steep\, and the space may be difficult to access for those with limited mobility. \nTo request additional accommodations for this event\, please submit your request in writing on the event registration form. DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a walking tour through Pitt’s campus to see iconic and lesser-known artworks by local artist and founder of Pitt’s Studio Arts Department\, Virgil Cantini (1919 – 2009). The tour features commissioned work for the Barco Law Building\, in addition to sculptures and large enamel murals located outdoors and inside of locations such as Hillman Library and Posvar Hall. The Cantini on Campus tour concludes at the University Art Gallery (UAG) where tour-goers will see the student-curated exhibition\, Earth and Ether: The Art of Lucille and Virgil Cantini. The tour will be led by Pitt students Louise Matthews and Shawn Simmons. \nCantini on Campus: Public Art Walking Tour is co-sponsored by Pitt UAG and Shiftworks Community + Public Arts. \nAdditional Information\nTour Information\nParticipants will meet in front of the School of Public Health\, located at 130 De Soto Street Pittsburgh\, PA 15261. SUMMARY:Walk & Write: Homewood Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:Homewood Cemetery\, founded in 1878\, nestled into the belly of Point Breeze will be our October destination for this year’s Walk & Write. Historian and archivist Jennie Benford will guide us through its lush\, historic grounds\, shedding light on little known facts\, delving deep into local history\, and showing us the ways in which the cemetery lends itself to gossip. Her insights\, combined with Sherrie Flick’s prompts will help participants write worlds seen\, unseen\, and imagined. \nAbout Walk & Writes\nSince 2021\, local writer Sherrie Flick has led the popular Walk & Write Tour series for Shiftworks Community + Public Arts. These hour-and-a-half tours traverse city neighborhoods and introduce tour-goers to various walking trails and footpaths. As participants walk these areas\, they have the opportunity to exercise their creative writing skills\, responding to Flick’s writing prompts at each tour stop. The writing prompts are unique to each tour route and correspond with its surroundings. \nAbout Jennie Benford\nJennie Benford is the Local & Family History Librarian at the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. She has been affiliated with The Homewood Cemetery\, in one capacity or another\, for over 30 years. She was University Archivist at CMU\, 125th Anniversary historic researcher for Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh\, a Clayton Docent at The Frick\, Pittsburgh Museums and Gardens\, and a founding member of guerrilla women’s history action collective LUPEC (Ladies United for the Preservation of Endangered Cocktails). \nAbout Sherrie Flick\nSherrie Flick is the author of 6 books\, including the essay collection Homing: Instincts of a Rustbelt Feminist. She’s the recipient of a 2023 Creative Development Award and a Writing Pittsburgh Fellowship from the Creative Nonfiction Foundation. She teaches in the low-res MFA program at West Virginia Wesleyan College and is a member of the Pittsburgh Creative Corps. She has been affiliated with The Homewood Cemetery\, in one capacity or another\, for over 30 years. She was University Archivist at CMU\, 125th Anniversary historic researcher for Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh\, a Clayton Docent at The Frick\, Pittsburgh Museums and Gardens\, and a founding member of guerrilla women’s history action collective LUPEC (Ladies United for the Preservation of Endangered Cocktails). \nAdditional Information\nRegistrants should plan to arrive by 9:50 AM and check-in with Shiftworks staff; the tour will begin promptly at 10:00 AM. \nAll writing abilities are welcome and no previous writing experience is necessary. We’ll learn about how this area developed over time\, its connections to the Underground Railroad\, the press\, and the coal industry. Barnett will be an integral part of the tour\, walking with us and reading from his work\, while sharing insight into how his childhood here shaped his development as a writer. Barnett will also read new original work on this tour. \nAbout the Book Tour Series\nBook Tour\, a series of literary walks designed by writers Hattie Fletcher and Sherrie Flick and commissioned by Shiftworks Community + Public Arts\, serves to explore\, reveal\, revise\, and renew perceptions of Pittsburgh and the writers and writing it has inspired. Literature\, like public art\, enriches knowledge of neighborhoods\, landmarks\, and the city’s cultural history\, shaping a person’s view of a place. \nFocusing on books by well-known authors who have become notable figures in the national literary canon\, and the work of up-and-coming contemporary writers\, we’ll experience Pittsburgh as a landscape of texts and gain fresh perspective on books and the idea of writing about place. \nAdditional Information\nThere are no public restrooms available for this tour. The walking route is easy\, and we ask participants to wear good walking shoes. DESCRIPTION:The Office for Public Art (OPA) is pleased to announce a new series of artist-designed walking tours during the late summer and early fall of 2023. OPA maintains a long-standing history of hosting and organizing walking tours for the public. To further expand this programmatic offering\, OPA commissioned four Pittsburgh Creative Corps artists to design and experiment with how tour-goers experience the region’s public realm. The artists for the tours are: Ginger Brooks Takahashi\, Erin Mallea\, Jason McKoy\, and Monica McElwain. \nEach tour in the series was conceptualized by the artists and focuses on engaging audience members through artistic practices\, participant observations\, listening\, physical activity\, and games. \nArt Creep and Crawl\nParticipants will be taken on a guided tour through Etna and Sharpsburg led by artist Jason McKoy whose recent work We Are Windows was installed in both boroughs. The tour will include stops that are popular points of interest in both Etna and Sharpsburg\, and will encourage attendees to engage with people and places that were significant to McKoy’s development of his artistic project. The tour will end with refreshments. It is intended that the stops remain secretive so that participants can try and guess each location based on riddles that will be emailed to registrants in advance. Tour stops will be revealed during the tour and are intended to create an informative and game-like atmosphere. \nWe Are Windows is an artwork created by Jason McKoy in collaboration with the Etna Community Organization and the Sharpsburg Neighborhood Organization and is sponsored by the Public Art and Communities Program of the Office for Public Art\, Neighborhood Allies\, and the Borough of Millvale. \nAbout Jason McKoy\nJason McKoy is a brand consultant\, ARTvocate\, social innovator\, and weirdo. Living with major depressive disorder has informed how he navigates the world creatively. He is the founder of McKoy Creative\, a warm hug for your business providing creative services from concept to completion that benefit communities. When not making stuff\, he’s either playing video games or sleeping. He hails from NYC. \nPreparation\nParticipants will be emailed a set of riddles where the answers are stops on the tour. Her latest essay is “Tennis is the Opposite of Death: A Proof\,” in The Paris Review\, a 2022 Best American Essays finalist\, and her latest poetry collection is All You Do Is Perceive\, a National Poetry Series finalist. A Writing Pittsburgh fellow\, she was writer-in-residence at Grasso Sausage\, the last Italian business in Larimer. Honors for her work include National Endowment for the Arts\, Barbara Deming Foundation\, and Stegner fellowships\, and she collaborates in the social practice art collective IfYouReallyLoveMe.org\, whose most recent project was live music for shift workers. Using collective knowledge-building as a strategy to shift the hierarchy of knowledge transmission\, attendees will be encouraged to contribute observations\, stories\, and questions to the group. Participants will visit the three sites of Nine Mile Run Viewfinder where Brooks Takahashi will present scores she’s composed\, invite discussion at each site\, and highlight places that have become significant to her artistic process. The tour will also be a closing celebration for Nine Mile Run Viewfinder\, Brooks Takahashi’s public artwork created in 2021 for the Environment\, Health\, and Public Art Initiative of the Office for Public Art. The tour will conclude with a reception and light refreshments. \n  \nAbout Ginger Brooks Takahashi\nGinger Brooks Takahashi is a transdisciplinary artist and educator. Her performance\, installation\, and site responsive works examine our relationships to the mediums that connect us. These public projects are platforms for intimate interaction\, an extension of feminist and queer praxis. She received her BA from Oberlin College\, 1999; and attended the Whitney Independent Study Program\, 2007. She has exhibited at institutions including Carnegie Museum of Art\, 2020; Oakland Museum of California\, 2019; Jewish Museum\, 2016; Tensta Konsthall\, 2015; Brooklyn Museum\, 2013; Museo Tamayo\, 2010; New Museum\, 2009; amongst others. Most recently\, she created a permanent public artwork for Schenley Park in Pittsburgh and a collaboration with Dana Bishop-Root for Counterpublic\, St Louis 2023. \nDirections and Parking Information\nTour goers will meet at the Braddock Trail Head at Frick Park located at 1400 S. DESCRIPTION:Interested in exploring Pittsburgh’s rivers this summer? Sometimes they seem to hide in plain sight. We plan to think\, write\, and walk beside a few. In this guided walk-and-write tour you’ll get outside\, explore city neighborhoods\, and write creatively.  \nWriter Sherrie Flick will lead this guided hour-and-a-half writing and walking tour that uses the urban environment and rippling water for inspiration. This session will focus on a stretch of the Monongahela River and the Hazelwood neighborhood of Pittsburgh. No experience necessary—just bring your pen\, paper\, curiosity\, and walking shoes.  \nAbout Sherrie Flick\nSherrie Flick is an award-winning writer\, editor\, and teacher who loves to walk around. She’s the author of the novel Reconsidering Happiness and two short story collections\, Whiskey\, Etc. and Thank Your Lucky Stars. Her nonfiction has appeared in Ploughshares\, The Wall Street Journal\, New England Review\, and Creative Nonfiction. SUMMARY:Wilkinsburg Sacred Spaces Arts and Culture Community Day
DESCRIPTION:Historic Wilkinsburg’s 2021 annual Sacred Spaces Tour celebrates history\, arts\, and culture\, featuring in-person tours of three historic landmark churches\, a virtual series of six additional historical church videos to be released soon; six Pittsburgh bands including Outside Elisa and Murder for Girls; Shana Simmons Dance; and The Wilkinsburg Community Ministries food festival. A full schedule of events is available on the Center for Civic Arts’ Facebook and website https://civicarts211.wixsite.com/website-1 \nOffice of Public Art (OPA) will be onsite during the event to feature the artists and artworks of the Environment\, Health\, and Public Art initiative. Artist Ginger Brooks Takahashi\, who collaborated with Center for Civic Arts and UpstreamPGH\, will lead walking tours to the sites of the Nine Mile Run Viewfinder\, departing every hour beginning at 12:30 and ending at 4:30pm; Aaron Henderson\, who partnered with the Breathe Collaborative\, will present his projection and sound installations from Project Mon Valley; and Mary Tremonte\, who worked with Grow Pittsburgh\, will hold hands-on dirt screenprinting demonstrations and distribute zines from the SHEd Cart\, part of her Dirt is Beautiful project. An information tent staffed by OPA\, as well as the SHEd Cart\, will be located near the garden at 710 Mulberry Street. Tours to Nine Mile Run Viewfinder will also depart from this location. \nThis event is free and open to the public.
