DESCRIPTION:Dear M\,\nYour letter made me look for the map\, I started getting lost in it. Isn’t a map supposed to guide? When you think about your lover\, eleven years ago\, who do you find? Can you see yourself through the lens of time? Have you ever mapped your affections\, drawing paths from one lover to another? So many questions… \nWalk with artist Carolina Loyola-Garcia as she leads a tour through amorous letters\, gardens\, and Madeleine de Scudery’s “Map of Love.” You will have the opportunity to experience remembrance in association with movement in the cozy and safe environment of beautiful gardens in Highland Park and East Liberty. You will not need a topographic map\, but might leave the tour with a draft of an emotional map and the beginning of a letter\, along with some gestures to accompany it all. \nUsing a few back alleys\, we will traverse a new path\, trying to find a connection to the backyard of your own memories. There will be prompts at each stage\, to engage you with your own self and memory\, and maybe with those of others. What have you erased and what have you kept? Who have you kept and who has been forgotten? Still\, so many questions… \nPlease bring a notebook and a writing implement. \nAbout Carolina Loyola-Garcia\nCarolina Loyola-Garcia is a multidisciplinary artist\, filmmaker\, and educator whose work explores the intersections of identity\, memory\, and the human condition. Originally from Santiago\, Chile\, she has spent decades contributing to the cultural landscape of Pittsburgh\, Pennsylvania\, where she established a practice that bridges experimental storytelling with digital innovation. \nHer artistic approach often blends diverse media—including photography\, video\, and performance—to examine how we relate to our environments and one another. In her large- scale commissions\, she frequently utilizes digital collage and fractal geometry to create immersive visual experiences that offer a sense of solace and wonder. As an artist committed to the public sphere\, Loyola-Garcia’s work has been featured in numerous exhibitions nationally and internationally\, reflecting her belief that art is a vital tool for community connection and personal reflection. SUMMARY:Miracles of Pittsburgh
DESCRIPTION:What is a miracle? How can an artist connect with mysteries that reveal extraordinary moments of surprising truth and beauty in everyday life? \nWhether you’re a long-time believer or a professional skeptic\, the Miracles of Pittsburgh tour invites you to encounter secret spaces that spark contemplation\, reflection\, and acts of witness. The morning includes three creative prompts during a silent walking tour with stops at Holy Spirit Byzantine Church; Friends Quaker Meeting House; and St. Paul’s Cathedral. \nThese three houses of worship are situated inside a single 1-mile route in Pittsburgh’s Oakland neighborhood\, and demonstrate some of the rich and diverse religious identities of our city. \nThese faith communities welcome those of all faiths (or no faith) into their spaces for contemplation and reflection. At each stop\, participants will complete creative activities focused on secrets\, mysteries\, beauty\, truth\, and grief in an attempt to make the invisible power surrounding us visible. \nParticipants should bring a writing utensil and a notebook. All other creative supplies will be provided. \nAbout Sarah Shotland\nSarah Shotland is the author of the novel Junkette and the artbook Abolition is Everything. Her work has been published in The Iowa Review\, North American Review\, Creative Nonfiction\, and Gulf Coast. Her work has been funded by the National Endowment for the Arts\, the National Endowment for the Humanities\, The Pittsburgh Foundation\, and the Heinz Endowments. DESCRIPTION:Morton Brown\, a local public art aficionado\, will take us on a walking tour to explore the history and public art of one of the most beloved Pittsburgh neighborhoods – East Liberty. \nMorton is an independent art consultant and served as the City of Pittsburgh’s Public Art Manager from 2009 – 2015. SUMMARY:Stained Glass Tour
DESCRIPTION:The Stained Glass Tour of First Presbyterian Church will lead participants through the church’s main sanctuary to see the 14 distinguished memorial stained-glass windows designed and installed by Tiffany Studios and J & R Lamb Studios. The tour will also include other areas of the church to see the Medallion window by William Willet\, and the Stem of Jesse window in the rear of the chapel produced by Clayton and Bell. The tour will be led by architectural historian Jesse Belfast\, and Kirk Weaver\, owner of Pittsburgh Stained Glass Studios. During the last half-hour\, participants will have time to spend time in the church to have a more in-depth look at the stained glass. \nPhoto by Tom Little \nAccess & Accommodations\nThe majority of this event will be held indoors at First Presbyterian Church\, located at 320 Sixth Avenue\, Pittsburgh\, PA 15222. A short portion of the tour will take place outside; please dress accordingly and wear comfortable shoes.  \nThe first floor of the church (including restrooms) is fully accessible. The accessible entrance to the church is located on the rear (Oliver Avenue) side of the building. This entrance is level with the ground\, but is accessed by the curb cut on the sidewalk along Oliver Avenue. All of the interior and exterior doors are manually operated\, with no push-button access. Shiftworks staff will be available to assist with opening and holding doors. Upon entering the church\, take the elevator up to floor 1 and exit the stairwell to the church lounge. Proceed through the lounge\, then turn left\, passing by the large 30-foot wood doors\, and enter the sanctuary through the double doors on the left. There is a ramp at this set of doors. Please note that this ramp is steep and may be difficult to ascend if using a manual wheelchair. The accessible restroom is located on the left just before the double doors to the sanctuary.  \nPart of the tour will go into the balconies\, which can only be accessed via stairs and are not wheelchair accessible. The Willet Window is located in the organ loft\, which can also only be accessed by stairs. These stairs are steep\, and the space may be difficult to access for those with limited mobility. \nTo request additional accommodations for this event\, please submit your request in writing on the event registration form. SUMMARY:Cantini on Campus: Public Art Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a walking tour through Pitt’s campus to see iconic and lesser-known artworks by local artist and founder of Pitt’s Studio Arts Department\, Virgil Cantini (1919 – 2009). The tour features commissioned work for the Barco Law Building\, in addition to sculptures and large enamel murals located outdoors and inside of locations such as Hillman Library and Posvar Hall. The Cantini on Campus tour concludes at the University Art Gallery (UAG) where tour-goers will see the student-curated exhibition\, Earth and Ether: The Art of Lucille and Virgil Cantini. The tour will be led by Pitt students Louise Matthews and Shawn Simmons. \nCantini on Campus: Public Art Walking Tour is co-sponsored by Pitt UAG and Shiftworks Community + Public Arts. \nAdditional Information\nTour Information\nParticipants will meet in front of the School of Public Health\, located at 130 De Soto Street Pittsburgh\, PA 15261. SUMMARY:Walk & Write: Homewood Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:Homewood Cemetery\, founded in 1878\, nestled into the belly of Point Breeze will be our October destination for this year’s Walk & Write. Historian and archivist Jennie Benford will guide us through its lush\, historic grounds\, shedding light on little known facts\, delving deep into local history\, and showing us the ways in which the cemetery lends itself to gossip. Her insights\, combined with Sherrie Flick’s prompts will help participants write worlds seen\, unseen\, and imagined. \nAbout Walk & Writes\nSince 2021\, local writer Sherrie Flick has led the popular Walk & Write Tour series for Shiftworks Community + Public Arts. These hour-and-a-half tours traverse city neighborhoods and introduce tour-goers to various walking trails and footpaths. As participants walk these areas\, they have the opportunity to exercise their creative writing skills\, responding to Flick’s writing prompts at each tour stop. The writing prompts are unique to each tour route and correspond with its surroundings. \nAbout Jennie Benford\nJennie Benford is the Local & Family History Librarian at the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. She has been affiliated with The Homewood Cemetery\, in one capacity or another\, for over 30 years. She was University Archivist at CMU\, 125th Anniversary historic researcher for Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh\, a Clayton Docent at The Frick\, Pittsburgh Museums and Gardens\, and a founding member of guerrilla women’s history action collective LUPEC (Ladies United for the Preservation of Endangered Cocktails). \nAbout Sherrie Flick\nSherrie Flick is the author of 6 books\, including the essay collection Homing: Instincts of a Rustbelt Feminist. She’s the recipient of a 2023 Creative Development Award and a Writing Pittsburgh Fellowship from the Creative Nonfiction Foundation. She teaches in the low-res MFA program at West Virginia Wesleyan College and is a member of the Pittsburgh Creative Corps. She lives in Pittsburgh. \nAdditional Information\nRegistrants should plan to arrive by 9:50 AM and check-in with Shiftworks staff at the main entrance to the cemetery; the tour will begin promptly at 10:00 AM. \nAll writing abilities are welcome and no previous writing experience is necessary. Bring a notebook\, a writing implement\, and curiosity for new places and experiences. \nPlease wear good walking shoes and dress appropriately for the weather. \nAccess & Accommodations\nThis event will be held in-person and requires light physical activity. Homewood Cemetery is not wheelchair-accessible. The tour will traverse both paved and unpaved roads\, as well as grassy lots. Attendees should additionally expect to walk up and down hills as part of the tour. \nThis event will be held outdoors at the Homewood Cemetery. There is free parking on-site near the cemetery office. If there is a funeral service the day of the tour\, parking is available elsewhere in the cemetery. Managed by the Allegheny Land Trust\, Sycamore Island hosts a significant floodplain hardwood forest and presents an opportunity for the public to visit and experience a woodland that is imperiled in Pennsylvania. Participants will be led on island walking trails with a series of listening prompts\, where they will practice redirecting their attention by closely listening to distant\, subtle\, and shifting sounds\, increasing awareness of the larger sonic environment. \nAbout the Kayak Tour Series\nShiftworks Community + Public Arts maintains a long-standing history of hosting and organizing walking tours for the public. To further expand this programmatic offering\, Shiftworks commissioned Pittsburgh Creative Corps artists Erin Mallea and Monica Cervone McElwain to design and experiment with how tour-goers experience the region’s public realm. \nThis series of kayak tours was conceptualized by the artists and focuses on engaging audience members through artmaking\, participant observations\, listening activities\, and walking. \nAbout Erin Mallea\nErin Mallea is a multidisciplinary artist currently based in Pittsburgh\, PA. Her practice explores the past and present of particular microcosms as entry points into larger environmental\, social\, and political conditions. Often public and collaborative in nature\, her work manifests in a range of media including installation\, video\, photography\, writing\, and participatory projects. She has exhibited at galleries\, museums and DIY art spaces nationally and internationally\, sent vibrations from a giant fungus throughout the atmosphere\, and currently publishes Tree News\, a newsletter about trees\, people and places. Erin holds a MFA from Carnegie Mellon University (2019) and is an Assistant Professor of Art at the Pennsylvania State University School of Visual Arts. \n\n\nAdditional Information\nWhile previous kayaking experience isn’t necessary\, this is an intermediate level route\, appropriate for ages 18 +. Kayaking to Sycamore island will take approximately 20 minutes\, and participants should be prepared for a longer return trip upstream. The return trip can take 30 minutes depending on the current and wind conditions. \nAttendees are required to wear life vests (which will be provided on-site)\, must participate in a short kayak safety training\, and sign a waiver before the tour begins. Please arrive promptly at 9:00 AM to undergo the short training and prepare to launch. SUMMARY:Turtle Cove Kayak Tour
DESCRIPTION:This tour will be a kayak trip to a small inlet on the Allegheny River called Turtle Cove. From the launch point\, participants will paddle along the river’s edge while listening to the water’s sounds and looking at nearby sights. The tour will then continue onto Turtle Cove itself\, where participants will notice sculptures created by the Cove’s visitors. These works have changed over time\, manipulated by weather or others\, adding to their artistic nature. Participants will consider the theme RECYCLE\, REUSE\, RENEW as they collaborate to make one new sculpture\, calmly fine-tuning the site as they search for natural and unique findings from the inlet. Before the end of the tour\, any non-recyclable trash not used for the sculptures will be picked up and brought back for disposal. \nAbout the Kayak Tour Series\nShiftworks Community + Public Arts maintains a long-standing history of hosting and organizing walking tours for the public. She has recently been exploring needlepoint in her art as a textural layer that travels throughout. Colors and shapes at first look uncomplicated but then develop intricacies through the use of various layers of line\, symbols\, textures or patterns. She is an inspiring muralist and loves to create large pieces throughout the city of Pittsburgh. She is a busy momma of three\, a roller derby enthusiast and full time elementary art teacher. “I am overall a passionate human being\, I surround myself with what I love and want the world to see my art in a colorful and unique way.” \n\n\nAdditional Information\nThis is a beginner level kayak tour\, appropriate for ages 18 +. Participants will spend approximately 10 minutes kayaking at an easy pace to Turtle Cove and approximately 15 minutes to return to the marina. Please note\, kayakers should be skilled enough to launch their own kayaks and be able to get back on shore without assistance. \nAttendees are required to wear life vests (which will be provided on-site)\, must participate in a short kayak safety training\, and sign a waiver before the tour begins. OPA maintains a long-standing history of hosting and organizing walking tours for the public. To further expand this programmatic offering\, OPA commissioned four Pittsburgh Creative Corps artists to design and experiment with how tour-goers experience the region’s public realm. The artists for the tours are: Ginger Brooks Takahashi\, Erin Mallea\, Jason McKoy\, and Monica McElwain. \nEach tour in the series was conceptualized by the artists and focuses on engaging audience members through artistic practices\, participant observations\, listening\, physical activity\, and games. \nArt Creep and Crawl\nParticipants will be taken on a guided tour through Etna and Sharpsburg led by artist Jason McKoy whose recent work We Are Windows was installed in both boroughs. The tour will include stops that are popular points of interest in both Etna and Sharpsburg\, and will encourage attendees to engage with people and places that were significant to McKoy’s development of his artistic project. The tour will end with refreshments. It is intended that the stops remain secretive so that participants can try and guess each location based on riddles that will be emailed to registrants in advance. Tour stops will be revealed during the tour and are intended to create an informative and game-like atmosphere. \nWe Are Windows is an artwork created by Jason McKoy in collaboration with the Etna Community Organization and the Sharpsburg Neighborhood Organization and is sponsored by the Public Art and Communities Program of the Office for Public Art\, Neighborhood Allies\, and the Borough of Millvale. \nAbout Jason McKoy\nJason McKoy is a brand consultant\, ARTvocate\, social innovator\, and weirdo. Living with major depressive disorder has informed how he navigates the world creatively. He is the founder of McKoy Creative\, a warm hug for your business providing creative services from concept to completion that benefit communities. When not making stuff\, he’s either playing video games or sleeping. He hails from NYC. \nPreparation\nParticipants will be emailed a set of riddles where the answers are stops on the tour. The riddles are a fun pre-tour activity where participants can check their answers as the tour moves from stop to stop; tour stops will not be revealed in advance. Participants are encouraged to engage at each stop and\, at the end of the tour\, attendees will have the opportunity to relax with refreshments. The artists for the tours are: Ginger Brooks Takahashi\, Erin Mallea\, Jason McKoy\, and Monica McElwain. \nEach tour in the series was conceptualized by the artists and focuses on engaging audience members through artistic practices\, participant observations\, listening\, physical activity\, and games. \nSycamore Island Kayak Tour\nArtist Erin Mallea\, in collaboration with artist Monica Cervone McElwain\, will lead two related kayak tours. Each tour focuses on the Allegheny River and its coves and islands. \nArtist Erin Mallea will take participants by kayak to Sycamore Island for a listening walk. Managed by the Allegheny Land Trust\, Sycamore Island is one of the few undeveloped islands in Allegheny County. The island hosts a unique floodplain hardwood forest and presents an opportunity for the public to visit and experience a wild\, natural island within an urban environment. \nParticipants will be led on island walking trails with a series of listening prompts focused on layers of human intervention and natural cycles. Participants will practice redirecting attention\, practicing close listening to distant\, subtle and shifting sounds\, and increasing awareness of our larger sonic environment. \nAbout Erin Mallea\nErin Mallea is a multidisciplinary artist currently based in Pittsburgh\, PA. Her practice explores the past and present of particular microcosms as entry points into larger environmental\, social\, and political conditions. Often public and collaborative in nature\, her work manifests in a range of media including installation\, video\, photography\, writing\, and participatory projects. She has exhibited at galleries\, museums and DIY art spaces nationally and internationally\, sent vibrations from a giant fungus throughout the atmosphere\, and currently publishes Tree News\, a newsletter about trees\, people and places. Erin holds a MFA from Carnegie Mellon University (2019) and is an Assistant Professor of Art at the Pennsylvania State University School of Visual Arts. \nPreparation\nParticipants should be dressed appropriately for kayaking to\, and spending time on\, Sycamore Island. Please wear comfortable\, quick drying/active clothing that can get wet. A hat\, sunscreen\, and sunglasses are recommended. Wear walking sandals or shoes that are comfortable and able to get wet\, and safe for walking on trails and uneven terrain. The trails at Sycamore Island are cleared and maintained\, however\, there can be poison ivy off trail. Socks can be helpful for this if you’re wearing sandals. Optional: dry bag/waterproof bag for a phone and wallet (10.7 Marina has some available with rental). \nArtist Erin Mallea will bring materials that are needed for participation in this tour; participants are prohibited from bringing any disposable or non-recyclable items. Sycamore Island is a Leave No Trace island. \nPublic restrooms are available at 10.7 Marina. \nKayak Information\nPlease note\, kayakers should be skilled enough to launch their own kayaks and be able to get back on shore without assistance. The artists for the tours are: Ginger Brooks Takahashi\, Erin Mallea\, Jason McKoy\, and Monica McElwain. \nEach tour in the series was conceptualized by the artists and focuses on engaging audience members through artistic practices\, participant observations\, listening\, physical activity\, and games. \nTurtle Cove Kayak Tour\nArtist Monica Cervone McElwain\, in collaboration with artist Erin Mallea\, will lead two related kayak tours. Each tour focuses on the Allegheny River and its coves and islands. \nThe first tour will be a kayak trip to a small inlet on the Allegheny River called Turtle Cove. From the launch point\, participants will paddle along the river’s edge while listening to the water’s sounds and looking at nearby sights. The tour will then continue onto Turtle Cove itself\, where participants will see sculptures and artwork created by the Cove’s visitors; these works have changed over time because of weather or manipulations by others\, adding to the artistic nature. Participants will fine tune the site with calmness and focus to look and search for natural and unique findings on the Cove. These findings can be used to add to existing sculptures\, create new ones\, or be brought back to the marina for an art activity. Before the end of the tour\, any non-recyclable trash not used in the sculptures will be picked up and brought back for disposal. \nAbout Monica Cervone McElwain\nMonica Cervone McElwain is a mixed-media artist\, who is constantly enticed by new materials and very experimental in her artmaking. She has recently been exploring needlepoint in her art as a textural layer that travels throughout. Colors and shapes at first look uncomplicated but then develop intricacies through the use of various layers of line\, symbols\, textures or patterns. She is an inspiring muralist and loves to create large pieces throughout the city of Pittsburgh. She is a busy momma of three\, a roller derby enthusiast and full time elementary art teacher. “I am overall a passionate human being\, I surround myself with what I love and want the world to see my art in a colorful and unique way.” \nPreparation\nParticipants should be dressed appropriately for kayaking to Turtle Cove. Participants should wear comfortable\, quick drying/ active clothing that can get wet. A hat\, sunscreen\, and sunglasses are recommended. Wear shoes that are comfortable to walk in and get wet. The artists for the tours are: Ginger Brooks Takahashi\, Erin Mallea\, Jason McKoy\, and Monica McElwain. \nEach tour in the series was conceptualized by the artists and focuses on engaging audience members through artistic practices\, participant observations\, listening\, physical activity\, and games. \nNine Mile Run Viewfinder Amble and Closing Celebration\nArtist Ginger Brooks Takahashi links the sites of her public artwork Nine Mile Run Viewfinder and connects the underground waterway from Nine Mile Run\, to stormwater and sewer systems\, the Monongahela River\, and the water we drink. \nThe tour will follow the original flow of Nine Mile Run and identify the current storm sewer path. Using collective knowledge-building as a strategy to shift the hierarchy of knowledge transmission\, attendees will be encouraged to contribute observations\, stories\, and questions to the group. Participants will visit the three sites of Nine Mile Run Viewfinder where Brooks Takahashi will present scores she’s composed\, invite discussion at each site\, and highlight places that have become significant to her artistic process. The tour will also be a closing celebration for Nine Mile Run Viewfinder\, Brooks Takahashi’s public artwork created in 2021 for the Environment\, Health\, and Public Art Initiative of the Office for Public Art. The tour will conclude with a reception and light refreshments. \n  \nAbout Ginger Brooks Takahashi\nGinger Brooks Takahashi is a transdisciplinary artist and educator. Her performance\, installation\, and site responsive works examine our relationships to the mediums that connect us. These public projects are platforms for intimate interaction\, an extension of feminist and queer praxis. She received her BA from Oberlin College\, 1999; and attended the Whitney Independent Study Program\, 2007. She has exhibited at institutions including Carnegie Museum of Art\, 2020; Oakland Museum of California\, 2019; Jewish Museum\, 2016; Tensta Konsthall\, 2015; Brooklyn Museum\, 2013; Museo Tamayo\, 2010; New Museum\, 2009; amongst others. Most recently\, she created a permanent public artwork for Schenley Park in Pittsburgh and a collaboration with Dana Bishop-Root for Counterpublic\, St Louis 2023. \nDirections and Parking Information\nTour goers will meet at the Braddock Trail Head at Frick Park located at 1400 S. Braddock Avenue at Allenby Avenue in Regent Square where free\, public parking is available. As part of the tour\, a van will transport attendees from the Braddock Trail Head to Hunter Park in Wilkinsburg to see one of the Nine Mile Run Viewfinder sites. \nIf taking public transportation there is a stop at Braddock Avenue + Greendale Avenue that serves routes 61B\, 71\, and P71. \nPreparation\nParticipants should wear comfortable shoes for walking on city streets\, as well as sunscreen and hats\, and should bring drinking water with them.
