Featuring core drummers: Elie Kihonia\, Hugo Cruz\, Kelley E Parker\, and Geña. Each performance will feature a special guest and is free to attend. \nPlease note that all musical instruments are to be handled only by professional musicians. \nThis performance series is presented by the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership and Shiftworks and is supported by the City of Pittsburgh with funding through the American Rescue Plan Act. \nAbout the Core Drummers\nElie Kihonia\nElie Kihonia is the founder of Afrika Yetu and UMOJA African Arts Company. He was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire) and exposed to both traditional and neo-traditional African music and dance at an early age. Seeing the need to introduce and promote Africa’s rich and diverse history\, culture\, and traditions through song and dance\, Mr. Kihonia became a co-founder of UMOJA African Arts Company\, in order to create an organization in the U.S. to unify and promote the arts of diverse African cultures. He performs\, teaches\, choreographs\, writes\, and produces multi-cultural productions internationally. \nHugo Cruz\nHugo Alexander Cruz Machado is a Cuban-born\, award winning\, international drummer and composer who has performed in South Korea\, Spain\, Sweden\, Mexico\, Chile\, Venezuela\, and the United States. Hugo is the leader of the group Caminos\, who have made appearances at the Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival 2019\, Fábrica de Artes in Havana\, Cuba\, First Night Pittsburgh 2020\, City of Asylum\, The Carnegie Museum\, Pittsburgh Cultural Trust events\, The Frick Museum\, Con Alma\, and Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh\, among others. \nHe is a graduate of the Instituto Superior de Artes\, the leading arts university of Cuba\, and in 2014\, won the award as the “best drummer” at the international Festival del Tambor Guillermo Barreto in Memoriam in Havana\, Cuba. \nKelley E Parker\nKelly E Parker\, born in Portsmouth\, VA\, raised in Washington\, PA\, and became aware in Pittsburgh\, PA\, where she currently resides with her domestic partner Lori Russo and their two dogs and three cats. She is the mother of a grown son and many grandchildren. She founded ABAFASI in 2009 an all female hand Drumming ensemble\, focusing on West African rhythms. In 2022 she became a guest artist with Rumbon De La Calle. She is the percussionist for Lori Russo and The Uppercuts\, playing Originals\, Blues\, Soul\, R &B. She is an African Drum maker\, jewelry maker\, crochet artist\, published poet and not well behaved womyn. \nGeña\nGeña is a Puerto Rican musician residing in Pittsburgh. She is a lead member of Geña y Peña\, Qlitterati and multiple projects in Pittsburgh\, and was the band leader and lead singer of Machete Kisumontao and other musical projects in New York City and Puerto Rico. She has performed with countless Pittsburgh-based and international musicians. \nGeña envisioned Rumbón de la Calle over a decade ago\, inspired by the many gatherings of natural percussionists in her native Puerto Rico and in New York City’s Central Park\, where she witnessed an amalgam of musicians playing their ancestral rhythms from the African diaspora. Pittsburgh needed to be exposed to this magical experience\, and in her musical trajectory\, while performing with some of the most talented\, authentic percussionists in town\, she began making a mental list and planned the execution of this dream project. \nDirections and Parking\nMellon Square is located in Downtown Pittsburgh\, bordered by Sixth Avenue\, Oliver Avenue\, Smithfield Street\, and William Penn Place. SUMMARY:FroGang Mural Opening Celebration with Artist Rell Rushin
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate the opening of Frofully Connected\, a new mural by artist Rell Rushin created in collaboration with FroGang Foundation\, Inc. as part of the Public Art and Communities Program. The artwork celebrates natural Black hair and culture and affirms the importance of self-love\, sisterhood\, confidence\, and connection. The event will feature live poetry\, performance\, music\, refreshments\, and remarks from the artist Rell Rushin as well as the founder of FroGang\, Kelli Shakur. \nThis event will take place at 501 Climax Street\, at the intersection of Climax Street and Curtin Avenue in Beltzhoover on Sunday\, August 20\, 2023 at 3:00 PM. The event is free and open to the public. \nThis project is sponsored by the Public Art and Communities Program of Neighborhood Allies\, Office for Public Art\, and the Borough of Millvale. \nAbout Frofully Connected\nFrofully Connected celebrates natural Black hair and culture and seeks to affirm the importance of self-love\, sisterhood\, confidence\, and connection. The mural speaks to FroGang’s mission of promoting and creating positive self-images for young Black girls so that they can recognize their self-worth and see beauty when they look in the mirror. Artist Rell Rushin developed this artwork in collaboration with the girls of FroGang. \nThe artwork was developed through the Public Art and Communities Program of the Office for Public Art\, Neighborhood Allies\, and the Borough of Millvale. This program supports artists and communities in working together to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic and its intersecting public health crises. Frofully Connected was created in response to FroGang’s defined community need of addressing racism faced by Black women and girls in the Pittsburgh region. \nFroGang chose the location of the artwork in their home neighborhood of Beltzhoover. FroGang’s founder\, Kelli Shakur\, was born and raised in Beltzhoover\, and most of the participating girls are from Beltzhoover and the surrounding Hilltop communities. Frofully Connected is installed on the side of a building that faces a lot that FroGang is in the process of adopting from the City of Pittsburgh. \nFroGang is committed to improving this site to give the community youth a place where they can feel welcomed and see themselves reflected in the artwork. The site is prominently located in the community and is visible upon entry into Beltzhoover from Warrington Avenue. DESCRIPTION:Literally So Hot is an exhibition of works by artist Rosabel Rosalind. This exhibition will take place in the Pittsburgh Creative Corps Gallery located at the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s pop-up park\, the Backyard at 8th and Penn. \nGallery Hours\nWednesday/Thursday 11:00 AM – 6:00 PM \nFriday/Saturday 11:00 AM – 8:00 PM \nSunday 11:00 AM – 5:00 PM \nLiterally So Hot\nLiterally So Hot consists of 20 works that collectively illustrate a vivid and melodramatic apocalyptic landscape. This world is informed by biblical mythology\, conspiracy theory\, pulp illustration\, the climate crisis\, and the artist’s identity as a born and bred San Fernando Valley girl. \nFeaturing Jewish Space Lasers\, mile-long traffic jams\, the biblical miracle of manna\, ant infestations\, and exactly 33 frogs\, Literally So Hot imagines the artist’s own sublime dystopia. The panorama situates environmental threat in the same reality as theological salvation narratives\, extremist conspiracy theories\, and contemporary disaster movies; all of which utilize sensationalism to convey an otherworldly intervention. Contending with both the rise of mainstream conspiracy and an impending sixth extinction\, this visual story presents an alternative world in which both real news and fake news coexist in an absurd universe beyond the earthly realm\, yet seemingly in a not so distant future. \nAbout Rosabel Rosalind\nBorn and raised in the San Fernando Valley\, Rosalind received her BFA in printmaking\, painting and drawing at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2017. She has been included in group exhibitions at the Art Institute of Chicago\, the Hyde Park Art Center\, and Sullivan Gallery in Chicago. In 2018\, Rosalind received a Fulbright Austria Research Grant to work with the Jewish Museum Vienna’s Schlaff Collection of anti-Semitic objects and postcards. As a result of this research\, she exhibited in solo exhibitions at Vienna’s Museums Quartier and Improper Walls Gallery. She is currently pursuing her Master of Fine Arts at Carnegie Mellon University. \nUsing drawing\, painting\, installation and comics\, Rosalind’s work allegorizes a sublime universe unraveled by the theatrics of theology\, biology and autobiography. Informed by Jewish diasporic storytelling traditions\, contemporary conspiracy theories and personal and cultural memory\, her images animate the inanimate with uncanny sarcasm and critical cynicism. Humor serves a survivalist role in her work; through melodrama\, irreverence and subliminal messaging Rosalind dismantles patriarchal\, anthropocentric and white-supremacist hierarchies of power.\nWhile Rosalind draws a lot of formal and symbolic inspiration from the art-historical canon\, political caricature and early comic and pulp illustration\, much of her process involves archiving personal memory from her coming-of-age in the San Fernando Valley. DESCRIPTION:Dream of a Black Planet is an exhibition of new works by artist Shori Sims. This exhibition will take place in the Pittsburgh Creative Corps Gallery located at the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust’s pop-up park\, the Backyard at 8th and Penn. \nGallery Hours\nWednesday/Thursday 11:00 AM – 6:00 PM \nFriday/Saturday 11:00 AM – 8:00 PM \nSunday 11:00 AM – 5:00 PM \nDream of a Black Planet\nShori Sims’ new paintings see Black people in a futuristic paradise of their own conception. Depicting Black bodies joined in joy\, Sims — through highly symbolic paintings — posits what could happen if African-descended people came together now\, in an act of mutual healing. Utilizing futuristic and utopian imagery\, Sims paints Black people in a way that highlights their humanity. \nSims is creating work within an imagined narrative. This narrative posits a world in the not-so-far future where\, having abandoned Earthly conquest in favor of intergalactic pillage\, whiteness is no longer concerned with the subjugation of Blackness. Black people are left on Earth and paradise is created from the ruins of white civilization. Sims’ conception of the future is highly symbolic\, and refers to the supernatural as a means to discuss historical trauma. \nIn their paintings\, Sims presents an optimistic response to afro-pessimist thought that instead posits an inevitable afro-utopia. \nAbout Shori Sims\nShori Sims was born in Baltimore\, Maryland in 1999. In their work–spanning sculpture\, video\, and performance–Shori seeks to excavate queer Black collective memory. Shori’s work positions itself at the intersection of past and future\, interrogating past feelings and experiences to further expand\, improve\, and propagate the archive. Conceptually\, Shori is fascinated by the line between life and death\, the construction of queerness and Blackness in a future that no longer necessitates the physical body\, and the Internet as a tool of queer Black reclaiming and liberation. Visually\, Shori is looking to early 2000s video games\, beauty supply stores\, and the Internet itself as a vessel of images. Please wear comfortable clothes\, bring water\, and wear comfortable shoes. \nAbout Flamenco Pittsburgh\nFlamenco Pittsburgh seeks to celebrate and increase awareness of flamenco culture in Western Pennsylvania. As part of that mission\, we offer flamenco instruction for the community\, for beginner to advanced levels. Our instructors and performing artists are professionals who teach and perform in addition to their daytime vocations. DESCRIPTION:PGH Tango Connection will lead this hour long\, all-levels class. The mission of PGH Tango Connection is to connect people through the passion of tango. Tango is a won­der­ful way to social­ize and meet new peo­ple while get­ting exer­cise and express­ing your­self through music. Classes focus on tango basics\, includ­ing the tango walk\, pos­ture\, embrace\, and dance floor navigation. \nAbout PGH Tango Connection\nHusband and wife team Koichiro and Yulia have been dancing Tango together since 2008. They were introduced while they were both studying at Duquesne University. Koichiro and Yulia’s extensive backgrounds in music give them a deep understanding of musicality\, incorporating this in their dance and bringing a powerful presence to their performances. Yulia’s passion for tango and her ability to capture the attention of her audience\, led by Kiochiro’s experienced and yet vividly improvisational hand\, combine on stage to poignantly reveal the essence of Tango: a man and a woman as one\, lovers for the length of each dance they perform. \nKoichiro and Yulia and their students traveled to Buenos Aires and studied with Jonathan Saavedra & Clarisa Aragon\, Julio Bassan\, Ines Muzzoppa\, Federico Naveira & Sabrina Masso\, Alejandro Larenas & Marisol Morales. The cou­ple has per­formed at var­i­ous venues\, includ­ing Tango en Huracan\, Club Atletico Milonguero 2014\, Maldita Milonga\, Santelmo 2015 in Buenos Aires\, United States\, Canada\, and Japan. In 2019 Koichiro and Yulia performed with Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and Wheeling Symphony. Currently\, Koichiro and Yulia teach at the Wilkins School Community Center in Pittsburgh where they also organize weekly social dances. Their characteristic teaching styles complement each other effectively to cover fundamental as well as more advanced material thoroughly in an easy\, progressive\, and very approachable manner. \nClass Information\nAll participants should plan to arrive by 1:45 PM to check-in. Please wear comfortable clothes\, bring water\, and shoes are optional during the class. \nAbout Sanskruti School of Dance and Music\nSanskruti School of Indian Dance and Music was founded in Pittsburgh by the performing artiste\, choreographer and artistic director\, Guru Smt. Shambhavi Desai. It offers an ongoing comprehensive training for beginner through advanced levels in Bharatanatyam\, Lok Nritya (Folk dance)\, and Hindustani Classical\, Semi Classical and Devotional music. Its mission is to groom the students in Indian culture and performing arts\, and to support\, celebrate and present to a wide range of international audiences the dance and music of India through performances\, workshops\, educational outreach programs\, and formal dance and music instruction. Sanskruti also offers a formal examination for Hindustani classical vocal conducted by the ‘Pandit Jasraj Institute for Music and Research’ after the first two or three years of training. \nSanskruti dance and music programs are influenced by the contemporary cultures of India\, by experimenting with different languages\, music\, and social topics-while retaining the unique Indian essence that defines the Indian Diaspora. \nSanskruti has been performing for the past many years at all major events locally and special events around the United States. Some of the events include Pittsburgh city’s Bicentennial Celebration\, Pittsburgh’s International Folk Festival\, the Nationality Room Events at the University of Pittsburgh\, the Interfaith Ministries\, the FBI Cultural Diversity Day\, the Wierton Festival of Nations\, Indian cultural events / festivals\, several schools and colleges\, local libraries\, several private\, semi-private\, non-profit organizations\, and fundraising events within the United States of America. \nClass Information\nAll participants should plan to arrive by 3:15 PM to check-in. DESCRIPTION:Join Alecia Dawn of YOGAMOTIF for an inspired workshop centering creativity as a wellness practice. Pause\, breathe\, and look inward to experience gentle yoga\, a reflective drawing prompt\, and a guided meditation. Wear clothes that support free movement including seated\, floor\, and standing yoga postures with variations available throughout. Prepare for this all-levels experience by bringing a yoga mat\, blanket or meditation pillow\, and water. \nAbout Alecia Dawn\nAlecia Dawn is an arts worker and yoga guide who explores the creative process as an invitation to heal. She believes that creating art and creating life are connected and invests her time in people\, projects\, and communities that explore these practices. In 2018\, she founded YOGAMOTIF\, a creative wellness studio that offers art and yoga classes to youth\, pregnant people\, and the community at large. She makes space to center Black women in healing\, and is honored to support the community with a joyful and breath-centered practice. \nClass Information\nAll participants should plan to arrive by 1:45 PM to check-in. SUMMARY:PGH Tango Connection at Allegheny Landing
DESCRIPTION:PGH Tango Connection will lead this hour long\, all-levels class. The mission of PGH Tango Connection is to connect people through the passion of tango. Tango is a won­der­ful way to social­ize and meet new peo­ple while get­ting exer­cise and express­ing your­self through music. Classes focus on tango basics\, includ­ing the tango walk\, pos­ture\, embrace\, and dance floor navigation. \nAbout PGH Tango Connection\nHusband and wife team Koichiro and Yulia have been dancing Tango together since 2008. They were introduced while they were both studying at Duquesne University. Koichiro and Yulia’s extensive backgrounds in music give them a deep understanding of musicality\, incorporating this in their dance and bringing a powerful presence to their performances. Yulia’s passion for tango and her ability to capture the attention of her audience\, led by Kiochiro’s experienced and yet vividly improvisational hand\, combine on stage to poignantly reveal the essence of Tango: a man and a woman as one\, lovers for the length of each dance they perform. \nKoichiro and Yulia and their students traveled to Buenos Aires and studied with Jonathan Saavedra & Clarisa Aragon\, Julio Bassan\, Ines Muzzoppa\, Federico Naveira & Sabrina Masso\, Alejandro Larenas & Marisol Morales. The cou­ple has per­formed at var­i­ous venues\, includ­ing Tango en Huracan\, Club Atletico Milonguero 2014\, Maldita Milonga\, Santelmo 2015 in Buenos Aires\, United States\, Canada\, and Japan. In 2019 Koichiro and Yulia performed with Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and Wheeling Symphony. Currently\, Koichiro and Yulia teach at the Wilkins School Community Center in Pittsburgh where they also organize weekly social dances. Their characteristic teaching styles complement each other effectively to cover fundamental as well as more advanced material thoroughly in an easy\, progressive\, and very approachable manner. \nClass Information\nAll participants should plan to arrive by 1:45 PM to check-in. SUMMARY:Yoga Paint Party @ home
DESCRIPTION:Yoga Paint Party @ home is a three-part at-home virtual yoga and art series led by Alecia Dawn of YOGAMOTIF. Classes will be held each Monday evening from January 24 through February 7\, 2022. The sessions are a continuation of the work of the Pittsburgh Creative Corps (PCC)\, a joint initiative of the Office of Public Art and Riverlife launched in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The work of the PCC encourages community connection and engagement through the creative practices of artists. \nAbout Yoga Paint Party\nThe Yoga Paint Party @ home mixes movement and making in a playful atmosphere of process art. A twist on YOGAMOTIF’s signature workshop\, participants will receive a bundle of supplies to immerse themselves in the process at home where they will watch the painting bloom underfoot and enjoy an art making journey complete with a memorable keepsake. Classes will be held on Mondays from 6:00 – 7:30 PM\, January 24\, January 31\, and February 7\, 2022. This all-levels yoga practice is intended to be mess-free\, meaning you won’t leave covered in paint. Prepare for this virtual session by bringing a yoga mat\, blanket\, water\, and plenty of space to create. \nAbout YOGAMOTIF\nYOGAMOTIF is a creative wellness studio that offers art and yoga classes to youth\, pregnant people\, and the community at large. Grounded in the collective healing of Black mothers\, we do this work through mindfulness\, self awareness\, and creativity-based practices. Whether working with youth in out-of-school time classes\, pregnant bodies in prenatal yoga\, or creative communities in Yoga Paint Party workshops – YOGAMOTIF joyfully prepares each student for life’s labor and the art\, inspiration\, and babies they might birth. \nRegistration\nThis three-class pass is $95 and includes the cost of materials and shipping. SUMMARY:Wilkinsburg Sacred Spaces Arts and Culture Community Day
DESCRIPTION:Historic Wilkinsburg’s 2021 annual Sacred Spaces Tour celebrates history\, arts\, and culture\, featuring in-person tours of three historic landmark churches\, a virtual series of six additional historical church videos to be released soon; six Pittsburgh bands including Outside Elisa and Murder for Girls; Shana Simmons Dance; and The Wilkinsburg Community Ministries food festival. A full schedule of events is available on the Center for Civic Arts’ Facebook and website https://civicarts211.wixsite.com/website-1 \nOffice of Public Art (OPA) will be onsite during the event to feature the artists and artworks of the Environment\, Health\, and Public Art initiative. Artist Ginger Brooks Takahashi\, who collaborated with Center for Civic Arts and UpstreamPGH\, will lead walking tours to the sites of the Nine Mile Run Viewfinder\, departing every hour beginning at 12:30 and ending at 4:30pm; Aaron Henderson\, who partnered with the Breathe Collaborative\, will present his projection and sound installations from Project Mon Valley; and Mary Tremonte\, who worked with Grow Pittsburgh\, will hold hands-on dirt screenprinting demonstrations and distribute zines from the SHEd Cart\, part of her Dirt is Beautiful project. An information tent staffed by OPA\, as well as the SHEd Cart\, will be located near the garden at 710 Mulberry Street. Tours to Nine Mile Run Viewfinder will also depart from this location. \nThis event is free and open to the public.
