SUMMARY:Shiftworks at Shore Thing: Kinesthetic Instruments: Objects for Play and Noticing with Makenzie O'Connor
DESCRIPTION:Kinesthetic Instruments is a hands-on workshop inviting participants to reflect on stagnation and movement through the making of small kinetic sculptures. Using paper\, pliable plant materials\, and waxed linen thread\, participants will tie\, glue\, stitch\, and assemble materials to create objects that respond to wind\, gesture\, and interaction. \nInspired by windsocks used to measure wind\, kites that have long symbolized liberation and connection\, and the playfulness of pinwheels\, these handmade objects become tools for noticing\, connecting\, and imagining. Part sculpture and part instrument\, they invite us to tune into the relationship between body and environment. \nTogether\, we’ll slow down\, pay attention\, and discover how movement can transform the unseen into something visible and shared. \nThis workshop is part of the Pittsburgh Creative Corps artist program series\, presented by Shiftworks Community + Public Arts and made possible by the City of Pittsburgh’s American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) Arts Programming initiative. They are drawn toward processes of possibility and approach design as a form of relationship-building\, a way of tending to the invisible forces that shape how people feel\, move\, and orient themselves in the world. \nDrawing from disability studies\, phenomenology\, and feminist design theory\, Mak investigates how environments structure power through their affordances — how they invite\, restrict\, or reshape embodied experience. Their work examines how spatial and material systems can either constrain or expand possibility\, and how design might contribute to more just and equitable ways of dwelling in and moving through the world. \nThrough publication design\, spatial interventions\, environmental graphics\, and material fabrication\, they develop projects that foreground lived experience\, inviting attentiveness\, sensory openness\, presence\, and belonging. \nParking and Transportation\nPaid public parking is available in the nearby North Shore Garage (across E. SUMMARY:Shiftworks at Shore Thing: Pollinate Your Creative Flow with Celeste Neuhaus
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, participants will engage with the river and local ecosystem to discover the interconnections between their creative process\, the act of pollination\, and the element of water. \nThrough writing prompts and guided watercolor explorations participants will be supported through making contact with their creative blocks\, allowing for these blocks to release and metamorphosize into flow. No prior experience necessary to participate. \nEach participant will leave with seeds and seedlings from a local micro-nursery to plant at home to contribute to pollinator pathways. They will also be gifted a watercolor set and sketchbook to paint their ongoing growth. \nThis workshop is part of the Pittsburgh Creative Corps artist program series\, presented by Shiftworks Community + Public Arts and made possible by the City of Pittsburgh’s American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) Arts Programming initiative. DESCRIPTION:Join La Vispera for a hands-on workshop beneath the shade structure artwork they created for Shore Thing. Participants will explore the same materials and techniques used in the installation\, including selecting\, cutting\, and assembling discarded plastics into original artworks to take home. \nWith design options for varying skill levels\, this workshop offers a firsthand introduction to La Vispera’s creative process and sustainable approach to artmaking. \nThis workshop is part of the Pittsburgh Creative Corps artist program series\, presented by Shiftworks Community + Public Arts and made possible by the City of Pittsburgh’s American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) Arts Programming initiative. Our repertoire includes stop-motion animation\, photography\, sculptures\, and\, predominantly\, stained glass windows made from single-use plastic. \nAs nature enthusiasts\, we continually strive to bring environmental issues to the forefront of our art. Our stained glass pieces are a testament to our commitment to this cause. SUMMARY:Walk & Write: Homewood Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:Homewood Cemetery\, founded in 1878\, nestled into the belly of Point Breeze will be our October destination for this year’s Walk & Write. Historian and archivist Jennie Benford will guide us through its lush\, historic grounds\, shedding light on little known facts\, delving deep into local history\, and showing us the ways in which the cemetery lends itself to gossip. Her insights\, combined with Sherrie Flick’s prompts will help participants write worlds seen\, unseen\, and imagined. \nAbout Walk & Writes\nSince 2021\, local writer Sherrie Flick has led the popular Walk & Write Tour series for Shiftworks Community + Public Arts. These hour-and-a-half tours traverse city neighborhoods and introduce tour-goers to various walking trails and footpaths. As participants walk these areas\, they have the opportunity to exercise their creative writing skills\, responding to Flick’s writing prompts at each tour stop. The writing prompts are unique to each tour route and correspond with its surroundings. \nAbout Jennie Benford\nJennie Benford is the Local & Family History Librarian at the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. She has been affiliated with The Homewood Cemetery\, in one capacity or another\, for over 30 years. She was University Archivist at CMU\, 125th Anniversary historic researcher for Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh\, a Clayton Docent at The Frick\, Pittsburgh Museums and Gardens\, and a founding member of guerrilla women’s history action collective LUPEC (Ladies United for the Preservation of Endangered Cocktails). \nAbout Sherrie Flick\nSherrie Flick is the author of 6 books\, including the essay collection Homing: Instincts of a Rustbelt Feminist. She’s the recipient of a 2023 Creative Development Award and a Writing Pittsburgh Fellowship from the Creative Nonfiction Foundation. She teaches in the low-res MFA program at West Virginia Wesleyan College and is a member of the Pittsburgh Creative Corps. She lives in Pittsburgh. \nAdditional Information\nRegistrants should plan to arrive by 9:50 AM and check-in with Shiftworks staff at the main entrance to the cemetery; the tour will begin promptly at 10:00 AM. \nAll writing abilities are welcome and no previous writing experience is necessary. Bring a notebook\, a writing implement\, and curiosity for new places and experiences. \nPlease wear good walking shoes and dress appropriately for the weather. \nAccess & Accommodations\nThis event will be held in-person and requires light physical activity. Homewood Cemetery is not wheelchair-accessible. The tour will traverse both paved and unpaved roads\, as well as grassy lots. DESCRIPTION:Join Pittsburgh Creative Corps artist Christiane Dolores as she hosts this acoustic musical performance series on the last Sunday of every month\, June through August at Mellon Square in Downtown Pittsburgh from 1:00 – 2:30 PM. \nAbout Rumbón de la Calle\nRumbón de la Calle is an ensemble of locally based\, world renowned percussionists and drummers of the African diaspora emulating the community gatherings of their respective countries: Puerto Rico\, Republic of Congo\, Cuba\, and the United States. Featuring core drummers: Elie Kihonia\, Hugo Cruz\, Kelley E Parker\, and Geña. Each performance will feature a special guest and is free to attend. \nPlease note that all musical instruments are to be handled only by professional musicians. \nThis performance series is presented by the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership and Shiftworks and is supported by the City of Pittsburgh with funding through the American Rescue Plan Act. \nAbout the Core Drummers\nElie Kihonia\nElie Kihonia is the founder of Afrika Yetu and UMOJA African Arts Company. He was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire) and exposed to both traditional and neo-traditional African music and dance at an early age. Seeing the need to introduce and promote Africa’s rich and diverse history\, culture\, and traditions through song and dance\, Mr. Kihonia became a co-founder of UMOJA African Arts Company\, in order to create an organization in the U.S. to unify and promote the arts of diverse African cultures. He performs\, teaches\, choreographs\, writes\, and produces multi-cultural productions internationally. \nHugo Cruz\nHugo Alexander Cruz Machado is a Cuban-born\, award winning\, international drummer and composer who has performed in South Korea\, Spain\, Sweden\, Mexico\, Chile\, Venezuela\, and the United States. SUMMARY:Walk & Write: Homewood Cemetery with Jennie Benford
DESCRIPTION:Stories of the past\, present\, and future are hidden in plain sight at the historic Homewood Cemetery\, founded in 1878. Participants will tour the grounds with archivist and historian Jennie Benford whose passions include shedding light on the little known. Her insights\, combined with Sherrie Flick’s prompts\, will help us write worlds seen\, unseen\, and imagined. \nAbout Walk & Writes\nSince 2021\, local writer Sherrie Flick has led the popular Walk & Write Tour series for Shiftworks Community + Public Arts. The summer and fall of 2024 marks the fourth season of this successful program after three seasons of exploring Downtown Pittsburgh\, Hazelwood\, Morningside\, the North Shore\, and the South Side to name a few. \nThese hour-and-a-half tours traverse city neighborhoods and introduce tour-goers to various walking trails and footpaths. This season includes Flick working with guest writers each exploring a different neighborhood and theme\, such as noticing\, inside/outside\, the past isn’t the past\, and immersion. \nAs participants walk these areas\, they will have the opportunity to exercise their creative writing skills\, responding to Flick’s writing prompts at each tour stop. The writing prompts are unique to each tour route and correspond with its surroundings. \nAbout Jennie Benford\nJennie Benford is the Local & Family History Librarian at the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. She has been affiliated with The Homewood Cemetery\, in one capacity or another\, for over 30 years. She was University Archivist at CMU\, 125th Anniversary historic researcher for Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh\, a Clayton Docent at The Frick\, Pittsburgh Museums and Gardens\, and a founding member of guerrilla women’s history action collective LUPEC (Ladies United for the Preservation of Endangered Cocktails). \nAdditional Information\nRegistrants should plan to arrive by 9:50 AM and check-in with Shiftworks staff; the tour will begin promptly at 10:00 AM. \nAll writing abilities are welcome and no previous writing experience is necessary. DESCRIPTION:Artist Erin Mallea will take participants by kayak to Sycamore Island for a listening walk. Managed by the Allegheny Land Trust\, Sycamore Island hosts a significant floodplain hardwood forest and presents an opportunity for the public to visit and experience a woodland that is imperiled in Pennsylvania. Participants will be led on island walking trails with a series of listening prompts\, where they will practice redirecting their attention by closely listening to distant\, subtle\, and shifting sounds\, increasing awareness of the larger sonic environment. \nAbout the Kayak Tour Series\nShiftworks Community + Public Arts maintains a long-standing history of hosting and organizing walking tours for the public. To further expand this programmatic offering\, Shiftworks commissioned Pittsburgh Creative Corps artists Erin Mallea and Monica Cervone McElwain to design and experiment with how tour-goers experience the region’s public realm. \nThis series of kayak tours was conceptualized by the artists and focuses on engaging audience members through artmaking\, participant observations\, listening activities\, and walking. \nAbout Erin Mallea\nErin Mallea is a multidisciplinary artist currently based in Pittsburgh\, PA. Her practice explores the past and present of particular microcosms as entry points into larger environmental\, social\, and political conditions. Often public and collaborative in nature\, her work manifests in a range of media including installation\, video\, photography\, writing\, and participatory projects. She has exhibited at galleries\, museums and DIY art spaces nationally and internationally\, sent vibrations from a giant fungus throughout the atmosphere\, and currently publishes Tree News\, a newsletter about trees\, people and places. Erin holds a MFA from Carnegie Mellon University (2019) and is an Assistant Professor of Art at the Pennsylvania State University School of Visual Arts. \n\n\nAdditional Information\nWhile previous kayaking experience isn’t necessary\, this is an intermediate level route\, appropriate for ages 18 +. Kayaking to Sycamore island will take approximately 20 minutes\, and participants should be prepared for a longer return trip upstream. The return trip can take 30 minutes depending on the current and wind conditions. \nAttendees are required to wear life vests (which will be provided on-site)\, must participate in a short kayak safety training\, and sign a waiver before the tour begins. Please arrive promptly at 9:00 AM to undergo the short training and prepare to launch. DESCRIPTION:Pittsburgh’s city parks are amazing spaces to explore with creating in mind. Immerse yourself in writing while we walk the trickling waterways of Schenley Park with writer Sherrie Flick. We’ll think about both the chaotic and calm worlds on top\, under\, and hanging over the park’s meandering stream. Headlamps will be provided for this tour. \nAbout the Walk & Write Tour Series\nSince 2021\, local writer Sherrie Flick has led the popular Walk & Write Tour series for Shiftworks. The summer and fall of 2024 marks the fourth season of this successful program. Over the past three seasons\, the Walk & Write Tour series has explored Downtown Pittsburgh\, Hazelwood\, Morningside\, the North Shore\, and the South Side to name a few. \nThese hour-and-a-half tours traverse city neighborhoods and introduce tour-goers to various walking trails and footpaths. This season includes Flick working with guest writers Nancy Krygowski\, Sarah Shotland\, and Robert Yune\, each exploring a different neighborhood and theme\, such as noticing\, inside/outside\, the past isn’t the past\, and immersion. \nAs participants walk these areas\, they will have the opportunity to exercise their creative writing skills\, responding to Flick’s writing prompts at each tour stop. The writing prompts are unique to each tour route and correspond with its surroundings. Each guest writer will read their work aloud during the program. \nAbout Sherrie Flick\n\nSherrie Flick is the author of a novel\, two short story collections\, and the essay collection Homing (University of Nebraska Press\, 2024). A third short story collection is forthcoming from Autumn House Press in 2025. She served as co-editor for the anthology Flash Fiction America (W. W. Norton). She loves leading writing sessions in unlikely places. She lives in the South Side Slopes of Pittsburgh. \n\n\n\nAdditional Information\nThere are no public restrooms available along the tour route. SUMMARY:Turtle Cove Kayak Tour
DESCRIPTION:This tour will be a kayak trip to a small inlet on the Allegheny River called Turtle Cove. From the launch point\, participants will paddle along the river’s edge while listening to the water’s sounds and looking at nearby sights. The tour will then continue onto Turtle Cove itself\, where participants will notice sculptures created by the Cove’s visitors. These works have changed over time\, manipulated by weather or others\, adding to their artistic nature. Participants will consider the theme RECYCLE\, REUSE\, RENEW as they collaborate to make one new sculpture\, calmly fine-tuning the site as they search for natural and unique findings from the inlet. She has recently been exploring needlepoint in her art as a textural layer that travels throughout. Colors and shapes at first look uncomplicated but then develop intricacies through the use of various layers of line\, symbols\, textures or patterns. She is an inspiring muralist and loves to create large pieces throughout the city of Pittsburgh. She is a busy momma of three\, a roller derby enthusiast and full time elementary art teacher. “I am overall a passionate human being\, I surround myself with what I love and want the world to see my art in a colorful and unique way.” \n\n\nAdditional Information\nThis is a beginner level kayak tour\, appropriate for ages 18 +. Participants will spend approximately 10 minutes kayaking at an easy pace to Turtle Cove and approximately 15 minutes to return to the marina. There will be walking\, writing prompts\, an opportunity to write\, a cat cemetery\, and live readings from Sarah as we explore the theme of inside/out. \nAbout the Walk & Write Tour Series\nSince 2021\, local writer Sherrie Flick has led the popular Walk & Write Tour series for Shiftworks. The summer and fall of 2024 marks the fourth season of this successful program. Over the past three seasons\, the Walk & Write Tour series has explored Downtown Pittsburgh\, Hazelwood\, Morningside\, the North Shore\, and the South Side to name a few. \nThese hour-and-a-half tours traverse city neighborhoods and introduce tour-goers to various walking trails and footpaths. This season includes Flick working with guest writers Nancy Krygowski\, Sarah Shotland\, and Robert Yune\, each exploring a different neighborhood and theme\, such as noticing\, inside/outside\, the past isn’t the past\, and immersion. \nAs participants walk these areas\, they will have the opportunity to exercise their creative writing skills\, responding to Flick’s writing prompts at each tour stop. The writing prompts are unique to each tour route and correspond with its surroundings. Each guest writer will read their work aloud during the program. \nAbout Sarah Shotland\nSarah Shotland is the author of the novel Junkette and the nonfiction project Abolition is Everything. Her writing has been published in The Iowa Review\, Creative Nonfiction\, North American Review\, and elsewhere. She co-founded Words Without Walls\, which brought creative writing to jails and prisons from 2009-2022. She is Program Director of Madwomen in the Attic at Carlow University\, where she teaches in the creative writing program. \n  \n\nAdditional Information\nThere are no public restrooms available along the tour route. The walking route is completely flat. All writing abilities are welcome and no previous writing experience is necessary. DESCRIPTION:This tour will be a kayak trip to a small inlet on the Allegheny River called Turtle Cove. From the launch point\, participants will paddle along the river’s edge while listening to the water’s sounds and looking at nearby sights. The tour will then continue onto Turtle Cove itself\, where participants will notice sculptures created by the Cove’s visitors. These works have changed over time\, manipulated by weather or others\, adding to their artistic nature. Participants will consider the theme RECYCLE\, REUSE\, RENEW as they collaborate to make one new sculpture\, calmly fine-tuning the site as they search for natural and unique findings from the inlet. Before the end of the tour\, any non-recyclable trash not used for the sculptures will be picked up and brought back for disposal. \nAbout the Kayak Tour Series\nShiftworks Community + Public Arts maintains a long-standing history of hosting and organizing walking tours for the public. To further expand this programmatic offering\, Shiftworks commissioned Pittsburgh Creative Corps artists Erin Mallea and Monica Cervone McElwain to design and experiment with how tour-goers experience the region’s public realm. \nThis series of kayak tours was conceptualized by the artists and focuses on engaging audience members through artmaking\, participant observations\, listening activities\, and walking. \nAbout Monica Cervone McElwain\nMonica Cervone McElwain is a mixed-media artist\, who is constantly enticed by new materials and very experimental in her artmaking. She has recently been exploring needlepoint in her art as a textural layer that travels throughout. Colors and shapes at first look uncomplicated but then develop intricacies through the use of various layers of line\, symbols\, textures or patterns. She is an inspiring muralist and loves to create large pieces throughout the city of Pittsburgh. She is a busy momma of three\, a roller derby enthusiast and full time elementary art teacher. “I am overall a passionate human being\, I surround myself with what I love and want the world to see my art in a colorful and unique way.” \n\n\nAdditional Information\nThis is a beginner level kayak tour\, appropriate for ages 18 +. Participants will spend approximately 10 minutes kayaking at an easy pace to Turtle Cove and approximately 15 minutes to return to the marina. Please note\, kayakers should be skilled enough to launch their own kayaks and be able to get back on shore without assistance. \nAttendees are required to wear life vests (which will be provided on-site)\, must participate in a short kayak safety training\, and sign a waiver before the tour begins. Please arrive promptly at 9:00 AM to undergo the short training and prepare to launch. Tour-goers will be on the water by 9:30 AM. \nParticipants should be dressed appropriately for kayaking to\, and spending time on\, Turtle Cove. Please wear comfortable\, quick-drying/active clothing that can get wet. It is recommended to bring a dry change of clothes to enjoy the marina and food after the tour. The artists for the tours are: Ginger Brooks Takahashi\, Erin Mallea\, Jason McKoy\, and Monica McElwain. \nEach tour in the series was conceptualized by the artists and focuses on engaging audience members through artistic practices\, participant observations\, listening\, physical activity\, and games. \nSycamore Island Kayak Tour\nArtist Erin Mallea\, in collaboration with artist Monica Cervone McElwain\, will lead two related kayak tours. Each tour focuses on the Allegheny River and its coves and islands. \nArtist Erin Mallea will take participants by kayak to Sycamore Island for a listening walk. Managed by the Allegheny Land Trust\, Sycamore Island is one of the few undeveloped islands in Allegheny County. The island hosts a unique floodplain hardwood forest and presents an opportunity for the public to visit and experience a wild\, natural island within an urban environment. \nParticipants will be led on island walking trails with a series of listening prompts focused on layers of human intervention and natural cycles. Participants will practice redirecting attention\, practicing close listening to distant\, subtle and shifting sounds\, and increasing awareness of our larger sonic environment. \nAbout Erin Mallea\nErin Mallea is a multidisciplinary artist currently based in Pittsburgh\, PA. Her practice explores the past and present of particular microcosms as entry points into larger environmental\, social\, and political conditions. Often public and collaborative in nature\, her work manifests in a range of media including installation\, video\, photography\, writing\, and participatory projects. She has exhibited at galleries\, museums and DIY art spaces nationally and internationally\, sent vibrations from a giant fungus throughout the atmosphere\, and currently publishes Tree News\, a newsletter about trees\, people and places. Erin holds a MFA from Carnegie Mellon University (2019) and is an Assistant Professor of Art at the Pennsylvania State University School of Visual Arts. \nPreparation\nParticipants should be dressed appropriately for kayaking to\, and spending time on\, Sycamore Island. Please wear comfortable\, quick drying/active clothing that can get wet. A hat\, sunscreen\, and sunglasses are recommended. Wear walking sandals or shoes that are comfortable and able to get wet\, and safe for walking on trails and uneven terrain. The trails at Sycamore Island are cleared and maintained\, however\, there can be poison ivy off trail. Socks can be helpful for this if you’re wearing sandals. Optional: dry bag/waterproof bag for a phone and wallet (10.7 Marina has some available with rental). \nArtist Erin Mallea will bring materials that are needed for participation in this tour; participants are prohibited from bringing any disposable or non-recyclable items. DESCRIPTION:Join the Office for Public Art (OPA) in celebrating World Peace Day and welcoming Little Amal to Pittsburgh. \nOPA commissioned Pittsburgh Creative Corps artist Cheryl Capezzuti to design one of five distinct events that will welcome Little Amal to Pittsburgh. Capezzuti worked with various local partners to create an event that will take place on the North Shore Riverfront Park’s Great Lawn on Thursday\, September 21\, 2023 at noon. \nAmal is drawn to a group of children who have gathered on the Great Lawn on the North Shore to celebrate World Peace Day. Under the gaze of Mister Rogers\, Amal finds a warm welcome where she thought she didn’t belong. \nAbout Cheryl Capezzuti\nCheryl Capezzuti has been making giant puppets and community-interactive public art experiences in Pittsburgh for more than 25 years. She is best known for the artist-made\, people-powered First Night Pittsburgh Parade which features about 300 giant puppets\, puppet-mobiles\, musicians\, pedicab puppets\, and over 400 volunteers. Capezzuti has also been an Artist-in-Residence at the Pittsburgh International Airport\, where she made parading puppets out of travelers’ discards\, and she’s been commissioned by the City of Pittsburgh to tell its history using giant puppets for the Bicentennial Parade. She teaches at Falk Laboratory School at the University of Pittsburgh where her Giant Puppet Dance Club may be the most unexpected student program. Between parades\, her puppets are housed at the Braddock Carnegie Free Library\, one of Andrew Carnegie’s first libraries\, and can be checked out by anyone with a library card for events\, celebrations and just for fun. Using collective knowledge-building as a strategy to shift the hierarchy of knowledge transmission\, attendees will be encouraged to contribute observations\, stories\, and questions to the group. Participants will visit the three sites of Nine Mile Run Viewfinder where Brooks Takahashi will present scores she’s composed\, invite discussion at each site\, and highlight places that have become significant to her artistic process. The tour will also be a closing celebration for Nine Mile Run Viewfinder\, Brooks Takahashi’s public artwork created in 2021 for the Environment\, Health\, and Public Art Initiative of the Office for Public Art. The tour will conclude with a reception and light refreshments. \n  \nAbout Ginger Brooks Takahashi\nGinger Brooks Takahashi is a transdisciplinary artist and educator. Her performance\, installation\, and site responsive works examine our relationships to the mediums that connect us. These public projects are platforms for intimate interaction\, an extension of feminist and queer praxis. She received her BA from Oberlin College\, 1999; and attended the Whitney Independent Study Program\, 2007. She has exhibited at institutions including Carnegie Museum of Art\, 2020; Oakland Museum of California\, 2019; Jewish Museum\, 2016; Tensta Konsthall\, 2015; Brooklyn Museum\, 2013; Museo Tamayo\, 2010; New Museum\, 2009; amongst others. Most recently\, she created a permanent public artwork for Schenley Park in Pittsburgh and a collaboration with Dana Bishop-Root for Counterpublic\, St Louis 2023. \nDirections and Parking Information\nTour goers will meet at the Braddock Trail Head at Frick Park located at 1400 S. Braddock Avenue at Allenby Avenue in Regent Square where free\, public parking is available. As part of the tour\, a van will transport attendees from the Braddock Trail Head to Hunter Park in Wilkinsburg to see one of the Nine Mile Run Viewfinder sites. \nIf taking public transportation there is a stop at Braddock Avenue + Greendale Avenue that serves routes 61B\, 71\, and P71. \nPreparation\nParticipants should wear comfortable shoes for walking on city streets\, as well as sunscreen and hats\, and should bring drinking water with them. There is a porta-john available in Hunter Park. \nAccessibility\nThis tour is not wheelchair accessible; other accommodations may be available upon request.
