SUMMARY:In the Field: Research & Ideation
DESCRIPTION:In the Field begins at artist Tim Engelhardt’s studio at Radiant Hall: Homewood. Tim will tackle the topic of research and ideation for a commissioned mural\, from the initial concept submission for the Request for Proposals to finalizing the shop drawings for the fabricator. Tim will shed light on some of the elements of conceiving a public artwork that go unnoticed by the general public\, such as client and community engagement\, research\, feedback sessions\, and design alterations. \nAbout In the Field\nNow in its second year\, In the Field takes participants through the artist’s process\, from an artist’s perspective. From research and design ideation\, to working with fabricators and implementation of the artwork\, In the Field breaks down the public art process so that artists and the general public gain insight into how an artwork becomes a part of the public realm. \nThis year\, artist Tim Engelhardt will lead the series\, presenting the artistic process and resulting large mixed-media mural Above Stage\, commissioned by Pittsburgh CLO for the entryway to their campus on CLO Academy Way in Downtown Pittsburgh. Each session of In the Field will be on-site at a different location significant to the project and will highlight a different step in Engelhardt’s process of creating the artwork. \nAbout Tim Engelhardt\nTim Engelhardt is a visual artist residing in Pittsburgh\, PA. Throughout the past eight years\, Tim has worked with businesses\, communities\, nonprofits\, and residences to create a wide range of work that meets the creative goals of each client. Over the course of the past several years\, Tim’s career in art has blossomed\, taking him to Las Vegas\, Reno\, and Virginia Beach to create murals for local businesses\, a project with the URA in Arnold\, PA\, a 6\,000 sq. ft. mural for the Davis Companies at their apartment building Terminal 21 in Pittsburgh\, a painted pathway for UPMC Children’s hospital and most recently\, overseeing the installation of murals at Kennywood amusement park. Tim’s ability to diversify his styles has given him a wide window of opportunities and he has seized upon them to great success. In addition to his public artwork and murals\, Tim maintains a home studio as well as space in Radiant Hall in Homewood where he is developing a body of abstract works. \nAdditional Information\nAccess & Accommodations\nThis session will be held indoors at Radiant Hall’s Homewood location. The location is also served by public transit (see “Parking and Transportation” below). \nThe space is accessed by one passenger elevator and two freight elevators. The studios\, pathways\, and common spaces are all wheelchair accessible. Facilities include multi-stall\, single-gender restrooms located on each floor of the building.
