SUMMARY:Public Art Training Camp: Community Engagement
DESCRIPTION:Joseph Claunch is the executive director of the Zuni Youth Enrichment Project (ZYEP)\, located in Zuni\, New Mexico. Founded in 2008\, ZYEP’s mission is to ensure the healthy development of Zuni children through summer camps\, sports leagues\, after-school opportunities\, and garden-based education\, all of which are grounded in Zuni traditions. For this session\, Claunch will be presenting on Ho’n A:wan Community Park\, in conversation with lead artist Daryl Shack\, and the important role that community artists and culture-bearers played in the design of the park to create the best possible space for the Zuni community. \nAbout Joseph Claunch\nJoseph Claunch is a member of the Puyallup Tribe of Tacoma\, Washington and graduated with his Ph.D. in Sport and Exercise Psychology from the University of Kansas\, a Master’s in Education from the University of Oregon\, and a Bachelor’s of Arts in Indigenous Studies from Haskell Indian Nations University. Joseph has 17 years of dedicated service to Native American communities as a classroom teacher\, athletic coach\, program leader\, and now as the Executive Direction of the Zuni Youth Enrichment Project. Joseph’s academic and professional pursuits have focused on developing programs and infrastructure that optimize the engagement and well-being of Native American youth. \nAbout Daryl Shack\nDaryl Shack Sr. is a member of the Zuni Tribe and comes from a long line of well respected artists. He has a passion for art\, culture\, conversation\, and his Pueblo community. Daryl has been invested in helping young Zuni artists learn more about Zuni’s rich artistic traditions and helping older artists to maximize the business of being a self-employed Native artist.
